Oh man! Everything went from chill to chaotic in Episode 10 of ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka this week, and my mouth was left hanging after I watched it! We’re finally reaching the climax for sure, or maybe we’re already at the beginning of it! There’s no stopping what happens now!
Japanese Original Episode Title:空のない街に降る星
You really can’t know when things will go haywire, especially if you’re still in the middle of making a decision. It’s exactly what happened with Jean! He just got back from hearing the viewpoints of some district leaders on why they want him to ascend the throne, then suddenly everyone’s talking about making their moves soon because of an unexpected incident! But we still don’t know what Jean’s going to do. And what about the others, who have their own motives? Will we get to discover what they’re really thinking before the coup unfolds?
The districts’ hopes: At first, the leaders were just casually sending inconspicuous letters with cigarettes to Jean as a way of telling him of their support. Now, Yakkara and Pranetta personally gave him their tribute cigarettes! They’re no longer hiding anything now and are definitely going all out with their support for the coup. Each one of the districts have their own motives for doing so; we saw it with Pranetta, which I personally think has the clearest explanation on why they went on board with the plans. No one wants to support a politician if they’re unsure of what they’ll do, right? That’s why they’d rather stake their bets on Jean and go down with the coup rather than go down without fighting at all.
Lillium’s ambitions: Speaking of politicians, Lillium’s apparently one, and so is his whole family! I should’ve seen it coming ever since he mentioned what his brothers’ positions in ACCA are back in Episode 3. How dare he use Grossular’s pure (probably) motives for his family’s personal gain? Grossular wants the coup only to bring ACCA together for the good of the country, but Lillium wanted Furawau and their family to become the most powerful in the whole nation through the coup! Classic politicians, really. And now that Jean’s visiting their district next, what have they got up their sleeves?
Nino’s Other Supervisor: His scene was short and he was only shown as a silhouette, but I’m betting some of us have gotten a lot of info on who this guy probably is! Previously I wondered if he could be Lillium, but I’m definitely taking it back now. My friend (and senpai) was telling me about the details of the room he was in, so now we’ve got this huge feeling that it could be Chief Owl! The placement of the window, the logo of ACCA, and even the lamps greatly resemble his room! If that’s true, then the reason he was there to save Lotta and Rail in the previous episode would make perfect sense, and why he always seemed to accompany Lotta everywhere! Plus, when he told Jean to talk to Lotta, I got this feeling he also seemed to know something else aside from Lotta’s attempted kidnapping, something about their heritage. We’ve yet to have clear proof of this, though, so it’s only another theory for now!
Everyone’s moves: And the moment the characters have been dreading, or waiting for: King Falke II falling ill! I hope no one actually had a hand in it and it just naturally happened because of his age. But because of this, a lot of the characters have begun to move! The First Princess immediately wanted Schwan, Jean and Lotta to be gotten rid of with no mistakes so there are no more threats to her plans. The Five Chief Officers of ACCA were making up their minds on when to start the coup and how. Meanwhile, Schwan either had to hope his grandfather would be okay, or wait for his time to ascend. Whichever scenario happens, they’re all super important events that would change the nation!
Themes & Trivia
Dreams: I actually love how full of hope Pranetta is, despite it being a poor district! Most people are quick to give up when they don’t immediately see the results of their hard work. But the citizens in that desert mining country have been hoping to find a rare gem, or anything that is not dirt, for a long time now, yet they still haven’t found anything. However, they never stopped dreaming! Even their government never gave up on supporting them. Now with the coup d’état brewing, they realized they haven’t been dreaming hard enough to think of their future once they’ve got the treasure they sought. And so they decided to dream harder and put their more of their hope in their mining, and on Jean.
Kanpan: also called Hardtack in English, they are biscuits common in military as emergency rations. They are used in long travels, either by sea or land. It’s because they don’t cost a lot and aren’t quick to expire, unlike normal food. Surprisingly, these ‘dry bread’ are still sold today in Japan, and they are actually fairly popular!
ACCA:13 definitely knows how to get to a climax! It did a great job of paving the way for it, setting up everything before it came! I thought Jean still had time to decide, but then suddenly he and Lotta saw the news about the king, and I immediately went ‘Oh no. Here it comes!’ The staff did an incredible job, not only with the story, but with the art as well! Their attention to detail, especially with giving out hints, is amazing! I know we’ve still got two episodes left, but right now I can say that I’m incredibly glad everything’s been wonderfully consistent in this show!
