Japanese Title: Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO
Takuya Arima lost his mother as a child he also lost his historian father two months before that in an accident. At this point Takuma has lost all motivation as his final summer vacation as a high-schooler starts. One day, a mysterious parcel arrives that contains an unusual, round mirror and a glass bead stuck into a strange object. The letter that comes with it says that his father is alive…? Takuya follows the instructions of the letter and goes to a place where he finds a collapsed woman. Also there are the school’s director and a mysterious transfer student. At that moment a light wraps around him with a heavy roar. That’s the exact moment his trip to a parallel world starts.
YU-NO is a peculiar case. It is based on a visual novel adventure video game developed and published by ELF Corporation back in 1996 about a protagonist travelling between parallel worlds to solve the mystery of his parents’ disappearance. In 2017, 5pb. developed and published a remake of the game for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4. I haven’t played either, but Director Tetsuo Hirakawa said the anime will include the same characters and routes as the original game and will shift the focus from the protagonist to the girls surrounding him. He also said that it will outdo the game in dirty jokes. And dirty jokes this anime has in abundance. As it has too many girls who are somehow connected to the protagonist in a romantic or sexual way, an antagonist who is not as vicious as an antagonist should be, a teacher who dresses like a prostitute, a time travel story that’s full of cliches, and animation that is sub-par to modern standards.
Should you watch this anime? Definitely if you’ve played the game and you want to see how it was adapted. If you just want a time travel story, you’re better off watching something like Erased. If you are here for the girls, there is not enough ecchi content to be worth it.
