Japanese Title: ユリシーズ ジャンヌ・ダルクと錬金の騎士
This story is set in the 15th century of France during the Hundred Years’ War and tells a different story for Jeanne d’Arc.
This episode was my definition of boring. I understand that the world’s culture is a huge library of tropes to create new stories from, but in the end is just the same story painted with different colors. Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight took a bunch of French things, mingled them together with fantasy elements like alchemy and fairies and created a story that feels outdated. The characters feel like they were taken out of a anime character generator (as is usually the case nowadays with so many anime created each season) and they lack that extra depth that would have made them interesting. We are thrown in the middle of a supposedly historical war between the French and British and a group of teenagers is going to French knight school. They belong to four of the most powerful families in France and because of the possibility they might turn enemies in the future, they make a pact to always remain friends. Right from the first episode, the four friends are separated and the protagonist uses the Philosopher’s stone to acquire the power of Jesus Christ. I’m not kidding. After the ending credits, the preview for Episode 2 suggested that this anime is going to be a bit more ecchi and erotic and that completely destroyed any chance there was of me returning to the story.
