Japanese Title: Gotobun no Hanayome
Futaro Uesugi is a high school student living in poverty, so when he gets the chance to work, he takes it. Like this, he becomes the tutor of the five heroines of this story. They are quintuplets who are on the verge of failing school, which is why he has to guide them safely to graduation. The story begins at Futaro’s wedding day, where he looks back to his days in high school and how he got together with his wife…
What I expect from slice-of-life harem comedy anime (oh my anime god, how much I dislike labels) is for them to be just cute and funny enough to have a nice 24-minutes. To be ‘just cute and funny enough’ they need to have at least a playsible plot to get the juices going and the characters need to be at least distinguisable from each other. The Quintessential Quintuplets has it all and it doesn’t bore you with too many anime cliches or with extensive fan-service (though the fan-service is there). Uesugi-kun is a genious but poor student who likes to be left alone. His family has huge debts and his only chance of helping with repaying them is to tutor the rich and beautiful Nakano quintuplets. The twist that makes this anime marginally more interesting than other harem gag comedies is that it starts with Uesugi marrying one of the sisters, but we don’t know which one! If you are into shipping, you will love this constant mystery as you try to see if your favorite ship is the one intended by the author.
If you like cute and funny harem comedies, give this a chance.
