Japanese Title: 銀河英雄伝説 Die Neue These 邂逅
A thousand years from now, humanity has advanced into outer space and is divided into two states: the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance. The war between those two has lasted over 150 years and spread through the whole galaxy without boundaries. It is a long war. The Galactic Empire is corrupted by its own aristocracy while the Free Planets Alliance is ruled by politics of evil. Both countries are shaken by the appearance of two geniuses. The ‘Invincible Genius’ Reinhard von Lohengramm and the ‘Invincible Magician’ Yang Wen Li.
I was expecting a lot of ‘Pui-pui-pui! Kabuuuummm! Bang-Bang!’ and maybe a bit of ‘Hahaha!’ and a return of ‘Hohoho!’s. What I got was a big moment where I sat there going ‘Oooh?’ and thinking I might have been totally wrong and then…exactly what I expected. The art, in the beginning, is amazing and I love the opening sequence, where we hear the explanation that things similar to our history and people are necessary and normal but not intended. It’s a deep line and I like it. When we were introduced to Reinhard I was expecting to hate him. Can I say that I might have fallen in love a bit with him? And I bet Kircheis did fall in love with him as well. The two of them have a certain aura, I sometimes felt like I was watching two love-birds and did try not to interrupt them. While writing news articles for this series, I thought that Reinhard would be the ‘bad guy’ and that we were supposed to really hate him, but as things are now, they will have to try really hard to make me like Yang. He isn’t as pretty.
With all the strategic staff that went on and the war, I have to say I still really liked it. I am not too much a fan of science fiction and the space wars they fight in series like these, but I think fans do get what they wanted and to be honest with the cliffhanger in this episode, they got me and I will make sure to tune in and watch next week as well. Not only is the animation amazing and the characters are pretty and well voiced, I like that the series seems to be taking its time. There are no rushed scenes. Sometimes we just look at a character in silence and see his reaction and calmness… I really liked that about the series and am looking forward to more! Let’s see what Wang has up his sleeve!
I suggest you watch the series if you like science fiction and similar series, epic space fights or…pretty military guys with suspicious relationships with each other. Oh, and if you like strategy, especially in the military field. I think there will be some scenes where they explain tactics and things like they did in Episode 1.
