English Title: The Ones Within
Within this strange new free game known as the Naka no Hito Genome, players are mysteriously disappearing without a trace moments before clearing the game. Akatsuki Iride, popular video game streamer, befalls the same fate and suddenly finds himself in a strange, isolated world – and gathered before him are seven other unaccounted for players. Now they must play games again, but this time for real, with their lives on the line, and gather 100 million views…
I feel like I’m missing a lot of info as I’m writing this review, but I’m not here to critique the techniques or its ties to the original material; I’m here to tell you how I felt watching that first episode, and to be honest, I felt like I’ve seen this all before and in a much better version. Naka no Hito Genome [Jikkyouchuu] reminds me a little too much of Danganronpa. The color palette, the monochrome stills, the classroom that needs to go through a test set by a weird mascot guy who may not be a bear but an alpaca comes pretty close in the creepiness factor. The page views setup seems kind of silly and I have never been a fan of Let’s Play videos. It also sports too many characters for me to make the effort to invest in either them or the story, so it will be a pass for me. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out. You can also return here and bash me in the comments if this turns out to be a masterpiece.
I’m always up for a death game series, but this one is definitely lackluster. The first episode was a bit of a mess from disjointed scenes to very random tonal shifts. One of the most important parts of the death game genre is creating a sense of tension – after all, people are supposed to be fighting for their lives! There was none of that in this episode, it was like the series couldn’t decide if it was a comedy, slice of life, or death game. The characters so far seem a bit bland, but I will keep watching just in case it magically all gets better in the next few episodes.
