Japanese Title: 中間管理録トネガワ
Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues is a spin-off story based of the Kaiji series, which follows Tonegawa, the right-hand man of Kazutaka Hyoudou, the president of the Teiai Corporation and owner of numerous gambling tournaments.
Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues is a spin-off anime based on the anime adaptation of Ultimate Survivor Kaiji, a Japanese manga series about the art of gambling, written by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. It follows the main antagonist of Part 2 The Skyscraper of Darkness, Starside Hotel, Yukio Tonegawa and takes place before the events of the Kaiji anime. He is the NUMBER TWO ranking executive in the financial firm Teiai and the most capable manager of the company. His greatest ambition is to become the Emperor in place of the current Emperor (dictator, Shogun, Company President) Hyoudou Kazutaka! Tonegawa is a realist with a talent for human psychology and the art of observation.
What is there to love in Mr. Tonegawa? First, you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of the events of Kaiji; the first six minutes give you all the info you need. Second, the art is fresh and unique. Not an artistic masterpiece, but certainly different than the anime we are used to. Third, its focus on corporate culture, loan sharking techniques, and the inclusion of the narrator as an overenthusiastic commentator make for an enjoyable ride in which you’ll know who the protagonist is and what is at stake for him.
If you like lighthearted parodies who just want you to have a laugh at its surreal situations, then you have to give Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues a spin.
