Japanese Title: メルクストーリア -無気力少年と瓶の中の少女-
The story is based on a free smartphone game by Happy Elements. It was released in Japan in 2014 and is available for Android and iOS.
Merc Storia will probably find a more suitable audience to fans of the smartphone game and followers of anime about monster hunting. The protagonists is your classic hero with a special power who goes on a journey to find the whereabouts of his father. his companion is a fairy-like girl who lives in a bottle and for whom we know little since she suffers from amnesia. In this fantasy world, the heroes do not capture the monsters nor do they make them fight each other. Instead, the Healers, as they are called, have the power to heal the hearts of the monsters and thus turn them from hostile to friendly creatures who can live alongside humans. A very humanitarian approach to monster hunting that reminds me of the video game Undertale. Yet, neither the concept nor the characters have that extra layer of puffiness (Japanese have a thing for puffy things) that will make me stick to the series. The action is mediocre, the animation substandard, and the humor less interesting than many of this season’s titles. Merc doesn’t get my vote but you might as well give it a try.
