Official English Title: Demon Lord, Retry!
The anime is part of our weekly reviews.
Akira Ono was just logging into the game ‘GAME’ as his character Maou – Hakuto Kunai when he suddenly found himself thrust into another world. He begins an adventure alongside a girl that seems to have a problem with her feet, nothing is ever simple when you are a ‘Maou’ (demon lord) with unbelievable powers. While he is fighting the country as well as the saints who try to suppress demon lords, he is slowly pulled into a riot.
I never liked isekai anime. They are wishful fantasies. They take a now tired trope I can’t help but connect to the Narnia adventures and try to bring something exciting out of it. Now, the genre can make a few stories work and you don’t have to go far back to find some amazing isekai anime; The Rising of the Shield Hero proved that isekai anime can deliver some quality content if they have a tight script and don’t rely too much on the isekai fans’ expectations. Maou-sama, Retry! has a loose script and relies too much on cliches that bored me out of my mind. The first episode took us on a rushed ride that missed the point of an introduction: to introduce the main character and the world he finds himself into. We learn too much too quickly and much of what we learn is pointless minutiae or, because of their brief screen time, seem trivial even if they are not. The schizophrenic soundtrack doesn’t seem to follow a certain direction and art style is mediocre at best. Should you see it? If you are an isekai fan, you will probably enjoy this much more than I did.
A dark, brooding man who looks like he just stepped out of a Victorian gothic novel meets a young girl who looks like the blonde sister of Rem from Re:Zero. That’s all to say about the first episode so far. Although much of it is rather slow, there is some development towards the end that kick starts the journey of these two characters.
