Nobuaki Kanezawa transferred to a high school far away from his previous school, because there he experienced things that kept him traumatized. It also made him keep a distance from his classmates, but during the sports festival he started opening up to them. Them, all of his classmates got a message on their phone from someone called ‘King’.
His classmates think this is a normal game, a prank someone is playing, but only Nobuaki knows what kind of death game is about to start.
This is a difficult anime to write first impressions about because of all the potential spoilers that could sneak into the comments. In King’s Game, the protagonist and his class are forced into a game that is played through cellphone texts. An unknown sender called the king is sending orders to the students and if not obeyed, the students die horribly through some sort of supernatural suggestion. The protagonist is the only survivor of a previous King’s Game. Clearly traumatized by it, he tries to be the odd one out by driving everyone away, but as the new game follows him around so that his new classmates can die as well. Talk about a sadistic villain.
The introductions and the way students are cleared of the list as they die reminded me too much of Battle Royale. There are rules to the game and we will probably see more of them in the anime’s intervals, but there is no ‘there must be only one’ rule yet. King’s demands so far have been part crazy part sexually childish (kisses and boob-grabbing and stuff) but the anime itself won’t cut out on the gory part. Though less polished and less interesting than the other gory anime of the season, Juuni Taisen, it will not pull any punches in trying to freak us out. With such a premise, I wouldn’t have expected anything less.
Some of the things that happened didn’t make any sense and the animation seemed a little sloppy at times, but the gore is much and it wants you to miss any holes to the story (and they are many). Yet, if you want something grim to fill your anime time, King’s Game might do the trick just fine.
