Japanese Title: ハッピーシュガーライフ
In this story, we follow high schooler Sato Matsuzaka (‘sato’ = ‘sugar’) who lives together with Shio Kobe (‘shio’ = ‘salt’), a child whose age is unknown.
Happy Sugar Life is… interesting. It is a different kind of love story where the protagonist is not necessarily the heroine. Satou Matsuzaka wants desperately to know what love is. She led a life of infatuating all the boys around her in a quest to find that feeling of love, but none of the boys could ever provide her with it. Enter a young elementary schooler called Shio who for some reason stays in the same house as Satou even though they seem unrelated. According to Satou, her relationship with the young girl, even though clearly platonic, is the closest she came to experience the feeling of love. And she is willing to do anything to keep that relationship.
As I usually do, I watched the episode without reading the summary or watching any of the trailers. At first, I thought I was watching a cute girl anime with random comedy scenes that wanted to bring a few serious elements to its cuteness. I was so wrong. This is a horror anime that employs cuteness to break its endless second-half streak of insanity. If you have seen Kakegurui, you will love the facial expressions of the characters and the verbal interactions between Satou and the people who wronged her and who she thinks are unworthy of claiming to know what love really is.
This is definitely a story about love. It’s just going to get a little crazy.
