Japanese Title: ガーリー・エアフォース
Girly Air Force is a story in which beautiful girls meet fighter aircrafts, as they face the mysterious flying objects called ‘Zai’, who are endangering mankind. The main character Kei Narutani once sees a dazzling red fighter aircraft and when he runs after it, it turns out it was the Anima Gripen. Like this the story of a girl that is the trump card of mankind and a boy who wants to fly in the sky begins.
This is what you get when you combine a love for aircraft and beautiful girls. Girly Air Force is based on a light novel series by Kouji Natsumi and, frankly, we had so many of those light novel adaptations that we basically know by know that they are just anime in book form. Girly Air Force combines CG aircraft battles with some mediocre character animation to tell the story of a regular teenager (it’s always that unless it isn’t, right?) Kei Narutani, who happens to be in the right place at the right time. He witnesses an experimental craft defeat a squadron of alien boogies and the crash in Chinese sea. In his attempt to save the pilot, he somehow creates a bond with the ‘Anima’ piloting the plane, an android with the form of a young girl.
I am sensing ‘cliche’ vibes from miles away and I kind of expect this to be another run-of-the-mill action anime with just a different premise. The first episode had all the right ingredients – drama, action, a typical protagonist with a purpose – but it feels like it’s just another serving of the same food. I like planes but I’m not going to waste any of my precious anime minutes on this.
