Japanese Title: 学園BASARA
Gakuen Basara is a high school parody of Capcom’s action game Sengoku Basara. In the original game, the player becomes a warlord in the Sengoku period of Japan (The Warring States Period: 1467-1603) and aims to destroy the other warlords. Gakuen Basara takes the characters from the game and put them in a school setting.
Gakuen Basara is so wtf that it’s glorious. However, and this is very important, if you are not already a fan of Sengoku Basara and its characters then the majority of the jokes are probably going to fall flat. The animation is pretty iffy and the setting is pretty weird, so the parody aspect of this show is by far its strongest point. I really enjoyed the first episode, mostly because I was a huge SenBasa fan back in the day! It only took 4 and a half minutes to get one of Masamune’s ‘Are you ready guys?!’ and thankfully we got an ‘OYAKATA-SAMAAA!! YUKIMUUURAAAA!!’ right from the first episode (it honestly would not have felt like Basara without it!. So, yes, I’m pretty satisfied with this silly little series. It’s going to be my guilty pleasure series that I am NOT guilty about whatsoever. It is 100% SenBasa fanservice.
This was a fun episode of random quackiness. I say random but the reason it felt out of place for me was my unfamiliarity with the source material. Since I am not a fan of Sengoku Basara most of the characters and jokes were lost on me but there was something that was clearly evident: this is going to be a fun series for those who know what’s going on. I for once had a nice 24 minutes looking at students with the names of historical samurai kick each other butts in a sport that was part football and part baseball.
