Episode 1 Review
Japanese Title: Free!-Dive to the Future-
Free! revolves around a group of high schoolers in a sleepy seaside town as they form a swimming club. Dive to the Future will follow the older members of the group as they move to Tokyo and reunite with their middle-school friends who were depicted in the prequel movie High Speed: Free Starting Days.
Free! Is back with a bang! Or should I say a splash! As a former member of my school’s swim team and a lover of the beautiful male form (lol) there was no reason for me to not like the Free! Series. The first episode the new series should please fans, as we get to see glimpses of almost all the characters from the first two series and and the prequel movie High Speed! It was great to see Asahi so grown up and with the same spunk as ever. Although the first episode started with the same ‘water is alive’ speech by Haruka, it is quite clear just in this first episode how much character development Haruka has undergone. His angst has subsided, his heart is much more open, and it seems he is already enjoying his new life. A big highlight in the first episode was Rin and Haruka both swimming freestyle, with the split screen making it seem like they are racing against each other. Although they are so far away, they are still connected. The first episode was of course visually stunning (as expected of KyoAni) and ladies can enjoy the eye candy. I look forward to seeing how the series will pan out, but i’m personally hoping we can still get lots of scenes of the new Iwatobi swim club (mostly because Rei is my favourite, haha).
