Fairy Gone is set in a time after the end of a long war. After the war, the Fairy Soldiers have lost their place in the world and are now trying to find a new one, each one choosing their own path and either going for the government, the Mafia, or living as terrorists. The protagonist is Mariya, who starts to work for ‘Dorothea’, an agency investigating crimes connected to fairies and suppressing illegal fairy activities. This is the story of the Fairy Soldiers, who fight for their justice in this time of after-war chaos.
Fairy Gone is… impressive, for lack of a better word. It takes place in an imaginary world whose technological level corresponds to our early 1900s: you have the mafia and the hand arms and the extravagant dresses of the rich and the steam train. You know the era. The world though is very different. The kingdoms on this world were recently united under one king after a Unification war. The main weapon in this war were men and women surgically imbued with the power of mystical creatures called Fairies. These Fairy Soldier could summon giant Fairies with unique powers to fight for them. One of those soldiers is now a member of a government agency that combats illegal fairy trading. Marlya, the protagonist, is reunited briefly with her childhood friend Veronica who seeks revenge against the people who burned their village, is imbued with a Fairy by accident, and is then recruited for that agency by a former Fairy Soldier called Free. And there you have a pretty solid base for future episodes. Marlya wants to find her friend, Free wants to find his friend, people have utter motives and fairies are going to get hurt.
I have to give it to P.A.Works thought: the anime looks decent. You can get the feeling of the era, and despite the superfluous dialogue that you find in most anime these days, the premise is laid clearly and without too much interruptions. You can tell what the Fairies do without unnecessary explanations and there is no infodumb except for the info you truly need to know what is going on. I was impressed by the CGI battle scenes. The Fairies blend well into the 2D world of the anime and they never felt out of the place. Fairy Gone is a decent action fantasy anime and it will certainly get the 3-episode treatment.
