Japanese Title: どろろ
It was during the Age of Warring States, the Sengoku period, when the samurai Daigo Kagemitsu promised multiple demons the body of his own child to fulfill his own ambitions. Like that, his son was born without any body parts as each of the demons took one, and to save his life, his mother left him on a river and sent him on a journey into the unknown. Time passes and a boy named Hyakkimaru travels the war-stricken country. He actually is the baby that was robbed of his body parts…
What happens when you mix a power hungry lord with some demons? A real bad decision. Bearing the brunt of the aftermath is limbless swordsman Hyakkimaru who travels to destroy the demons who took everything from him. The first episode immediately gripped me, with the fluid animations, tense music and tantalising story. I can’t wait to see where his story goes in the coming weeks!
It’s always a pleasure to see anime based on manga from the great masters. Dororo is based on a story by one of the greatest, Osamu Tezuka, who you may know from Astro Boy, Black Jack, Triton, and more, and it tells a story of swordsmen and demons during the Sengoku period, one of the bleakest periods in Japanese history marked by social upheaval, political intrigue, and near-constant military conflict. With art and music to match the historical period, the anime follow a simple plot: protagonist lost something precious, goes on a journey to find that precious thing, on the way meets sidekick with own tragic story, they travel together and face many adversaries. It’s a tried technique that works well for Dororo and its demon-slaying protagonist. If you like historical shounen action stories, then definitely give Dororo a chance.
