Japanese Title: DEVILMAN crybaby
Go Nagai’s Devilman will be turned into an anime titled Devilman Crybaby, which will cover the whole story
I wasn’t sure if I should bother writing a first impression as the whole series has already been released, but I just wanted to say – WATCH THIS. We are only one week into 2018 and I’ve already found the best anime of the year….
If you can stomach violent and sexual scenes, I think everybody with a Netflix subscription should check out this adaptation of Nagai Go’s Devilman (this is the first faithful adaptation of the original manga from beginning to end) and of course the distinctive animation from my favorite anime director Masaaki Yuasa and his studio Science Saru were an absolute perfect fit. Please keep a special ear out for Ayumu Murase’s insanely good performance as Ryo.
While I have heard the name before (it’s difficult not to if you are into anime a little more than some mainstream watching) I must admit that I had no idea what or who Devilman was prior to this. After this first episode, I am still not sure how to react to these 24-minutes of cinematic action, bloody gores, and bouncing demon titties.
The anime is based on a gory manga by Go Nagai, and this is director Masaaki Yuasa’s take on one of the most hyperviolent anime of the 80s, and believe me when I say that the decade was all about violence. The imaginative animation might seem off-putting to some (I heard a few complaints) but I found it refreshing and somewhat brilliant. The story is so simple and easy to follow that you will either find yourself annoyed by its simplicity or relieved that you don’t have to scratch your head trying to understand what is going on.
Devilman is blood and sex turned up to eleven. Don’t expect much more than that.
