Japanese Title: Binan Koukou Chukyuu Boueibu Happy Kiss! | 美男高校地球防衛部HAPPY KISS！
A town in the northern Kanto region of Japan, Binan City. Binan High School’s The Earth Defense Club (laugh) is still known as the ‘Do Nothing Club’… Club members are Kyotaro Shuzenji, Ryoma Kirishima, Nanao Wakura, Taishi Manza and Ichiro Dogo. They are part of a club, which just enjoys a tea break nonchalantly, chatter away silly talks and don’t even make one sen (hundredth of 1 yen) profit.
After school, they all move to Kurotamayu. It feels too good to sink in hot water, but when Kirishima pulled Shuzenji out of the water, they caught a beautiful boy with a strange appearance.
‘I am the first prince of Honyaraland, Karurusu!
I came to reign happily over you☆’
And so the five The Earth Defense Club members get caught up in the battle for the succession of Honyaraland…
Cute High School Earth Defense Club is a simple and cheerful anime about magical boys. It’s essentially a monster-of-the week story with cute guys in silly outfits. This series is a successor to Cute High School Earth Defense Club Love, Love Love and Love Love Love, but I would say you don’t need to watch the original to understand this. From the first episode, it is clear that the format is the same as the first generation, i.e as follows: a student at the school, who just happens to be voiced by a VERY popular voice actor, is suffering from some kind of insecurity. He is approached by the ‘evil’ school council who are guided by a funny-colored animal, who transforms the student into a funky-looking monster that represents their insecurity. The Defense Club use the power of their bracelets to transform into cuties that fight against the monster. When the monster is weakened, the boys all unite to create a super strong weapon used by the red leader to defeat the monster and shower it in love (or in the case of the new series, happiness).
So, what did I think of the episode? I think I may actually prefer Happy Kiss over Love. Some of the comedy was hilarious (especially when Kyojiro said something along the lines of ‘don’t worry about your voice breaking- the rest of your body will become an old man too). Having mascot animals that transform into beautiful men is a fresh take on the colorful alien animals from the previous season, and I enjoyed the fact that the transformation kiss was a pledge of loyalty to their Prince. I also love the outfits! If you look closely, they all have a bit of thigh poking through and it’s adorable!
Regarding the cast, the new Defense club are voiced by complete newbies, so some of the voices sound a little bit off from time to time. This is actually one of the biggest charms for myself and many Japanese fans, as they are still very rough around the edges but have a lot of potential. Let’s remember that the VAs of the first-gen Defense Club were still newbies when they appeared in the anime, and they are all very famous voice actors now! I’m looking forward to seeing their growth. The rest of the cast are voice actors who are very popular with female fans, and interestingly enough, most of them made cameos themselves as the monsters in the previous generation! (I’m hoping it comes around full circle and some of the Battle Lovers cast from the first anime appear as monsters…) This episode saw a double-cameo, with both Murase Ayumu and Takuya Kuroda voicing Wataru. I ADORE Murase’s sweet, feminine voice and I’m glad he was used to give such a hilarious effect.
I’m looking forward to seeing how far this series can push the limit of ridiculousness, and if you fit right into the audience target (especially if you’re a seiyuu fangirl like myself) then give it a go. If not then don’t even waste your time.
And I‘m also quite glad they don’t shout ‘LOVE-MAKING!!’ every episode now….
