The anime is part of our weekly reviews.
The story follows Bem, Bela and Belo, who are labelled as humanoid monsters but still try to live an earnest life in the darkness. The series has been re-made before and even had a live action adaptation.
Another remake of the original 1968, Yōkai Ningen Bem is here and this adaptation celebrates the series’ 50th anniversary. If you are familiar with the show, you know that BEM is all about three humanoid youkai -Bem, Belo and Bela- that fight for justice and protect humans, in the hope that one day they might become humans themselves. What makes the 2019 version of BEM particularly interesting is probably the immense change in the art style compared to what we have been used to before. Amazing soundtrack and opening with so much jazzy vibes to it and the appropriate amount of noir that makes a show have great visuals. With a little bit of action and a little bit of violence, it looks like It’s probably going to follow an episodic kind-of-format that will introduce a new enemy each time, with this mastermind ‘Professor’ lingering at the back as the main villain. If you are reminiscent of the past and you are intrigued to see the modern version of a 60s anime, then BEM is a great recommendation for this season.
