Japanese Title: バナナフィッシュ
New York. Ash is a guy with outstanding appearance and fighting abilities. The young gang-leader hears the mysterious words ‘Banana Fish’ muttered from one of his men just as he dies. During that time, he also meets the Japanese boy Eiji Okumura, who came to New York as the assistant of a photographer. The two of them start to search for the truth behind the words ‘Banana Fish’…
As a long-time fan of anime and manga, I have heard about this manga before. I know it is famous. But I had no idea what it was about or why it was famous. I can only say that the first episode made a good start and that I am totally in love with Ash! He is a great character, the kind we can only love and adore. For the story, it is way too soon to say from the first episode. There are gunfights, there is the cool America, the cute little Japanese guy, lots of gangsters and bad-assing. You can already smell all the intrigues that will happen in the future. I will try to stick to this series, though I feel like it is one of those that would be better to wait out and binge at the end of the season. That being said, please do watch it if you like series with a good story, are not too squeamish about blood and shootings, then this definitely is a look worth!
Although I’ve known about Banana Fish for many years, it is something I have just never got round to reading. This is why I was super excited to hear about this anime adaptation and am going into it as a complete newbie. I have to say so far so good! I love how the character designs seem to be a blend of the original designs with a modern style, and although I am not 100% on Yuma Uchida’s performance as Ash (don’t get me wrong, I love Uchida but his forced deep voice is coming across a little unnatural to me) the cast is pretty nice. The story sucks you in right from the get-go, and the interesting camera angles make it a visual treat even if the animation fails in some small places now and again. Banana Fish looks extremely promising, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes.
