Japanese Title: バキ
Baki is a sequel to Grappler Baki, the second animation series of Baki. The story revolves around the ruleless battles of five death-row prisoners from all around the world that have gathered in Tokyo to participate in underground battles where they have to fight martial art warriors. Along with eponymous character Baki Hanma, the prisoners are Kaoru Hanayama, Goki Shibukawa, Retsu Kaioh, and Doppo Orochi.
When an anime starts with an opening sequence that features a heavy guitar riff by GRANRODEO, it certainly grabs my attention. The rest of it was… well… what I expected from a series that puts extraordinarily strong men to fight each other. Setting aside any pretense of having a plausible plot, Baki takes the concept of synchronicity, a seemingly scientific concept that has nothing to do with what the anime implies, to bring 5 superhuman death-row inmates to Japan after they escape under incomprehensible odds (from a submarine, under extreme cold, from a glass prison, etc.) in order to ‘know what defeat is.’ I guess giving them a higher purpose was the only way to bring them under the invisible control of the creator, since these guys are seriously scary.
Just like Baki the Grappler, the series this is based on, the inmates will take part in a MMA-like tournament where, judging from the amount of blood and gore in the first episode, they will try to kill each other. If you like martial arts and tournament arcs, this is an anime you shouldn’t miss. I am looking forward to the fights.
