I went to the Japan’s largest figure festival “Wonder Festival 2016 [summer] which was held at Makuhari Messe on July 24th!
Please see the list below for an article summary.
We have prepared a present for you so make sure you read until the end!
Wonder Festival is Japan’s largest garage kit convention which is held twice every year in summer and winter.
Kaiyodo, a figure maker representing Japan, is the organizer of the festival.
Wonder Festival started in 1985 and there were only 10 dealers and 2,000 visitors participating in the festival at that time. Now, the festival has grown to the world’s largest figure event with about 1,900 dealers and 56,000 visitors.
It has become a sacred place for figure creators regardless of them being professional or amateur.
The biggest highlights of Wonder Festival are the company booths and amateur dealers.
At company booths, you can find the latest model of figures, models, toys ahead of everyone.
Many people gather at company booths to see the latest models. You may have to wait for 30 or 40 minutes to get a photo at popular company booths. It was 40 minutes at the exhibition corner of “Idol Master”.
Sometimes, you have to wait for more than 1 hour to purchase goods. It means that fans are anticipating the latest models so much that they don’t mind waiting in a long line.
Also, there are many events including talk shows, live performances and autograph sessions by famous figure creators held so you won’t get tired of the place even if you stay there a whole day.
The word “amateur dealer” indicates an exhibition or booth of garage kit run by amateurs.
Visiting amateur dealer booths is like a treasure hunt. Even though they are amateurs, they often create high quality figures that are beyond the level of amateur. Also, you can purchase the works if you like them.
Now, one of the biggest characteristics of Wonder Festival is a sale system called “Day Copyright Syste”. To sell character goods, you usually have to get permission from publishers but if you use this system, you are allowed to sell character goods that day. Meaning all character goods sold at Wonder Festival are genuine. They have received over 2,000 permissions so this is such a feat!
The venue is spacious and crowded with people.
It often happens that goods you are aiming to purchase become sold-out if you don’t hurry.
Therefore, in order to enjoy Wonder Festival efficiently, you need to learn about it beforehand.
A guide book of Wonder Festival comes with the admission ticket.
This guide book works as a ticket on the day.
The guide book contains a map of the place and the information on dealers.
Also you can look up “#wf2016s” on Twitter to get the latest information.
It is recommended to decide on the place to go prior to visiting the festival.
