Hi there! I’m Ayumi, your favorite otaku writer here in MANGA.TOKYO! Legendary manga magazine Weekly Shounen Jump can sum up my adolescent days. While reporting at J-WORLD TOKYO, I feel a little embarrassed because the place reminds me of my teenage years. Don’t ask me exactly what happened. We were all pure and innocent once, weren’t we? Yu Yu Hakusho, The Prince of Tennis, Reborn!, Gintama, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Haikyu!! – you name it, I’ve read them all. My visit to J-WORLD TOKYO reminded me of my long relationship with Shounen Jump, a relationship it’s still going on strong.
This is the second part of the amazing journey to the J-WORLD TOKYO. This time, the fearless otaku team of MANGA.TOKYO visited the NARUTO and Gintama areas!
The area is filled with an old-fashioned Japanese atmosphere. The staff welcome us wearing hakama, a kind of formal Japanese trousers.
I had a peek at the entrance and found the members of the Shinsengumi when they were young*. Well, is this Mountain-Zaki (Sagaru Yamazaki)? I wasn’t expecting to see him here.
The green hair is …*
It’s a game called ‘Mountain Zaki Roulette Match the Mohican’ and you hit his mohawk to start the roulette. It’s a paying but no-lose game, so you can get a rather nice gift.*
*These displays are no longer available.
There is a Gintama shrine here! Let me have a look and pray.
Well, what can I say… I don’t have any words for, er, Mr Kondo calling over some rhinoceros beetles. Just believe me when I say that it’s a very Gintama-ish surreal image. By the way, you’ll be shown a unique picture here, so you never know what you’ll get before you ring the bell at the shrine!
After the shrine, I found the well-known shop, Yorozuya Gin-chan! Looks like Sagaru Yamazaki is on his surveillance mission. I feel somehow relieved it’s Yamazaki and not Mountain Zaki…
There are a couple of secret doors at Gin-san’s office. Don’t forget to open them for fun. I liked the justaway’s one.
The cover of Shounen Jump is the legendary ‘Gintaman’. Good one! Such fine detail makes me laugh.
Look at these Gintama characters on the food packaging! Obviously, Hijikata’s special rice bowl has mayonnaise on the side. I looked up at the side wall and found…
It’s the observation diary of Yamazaki from Episode 205 ‘Yamazaki Eats Anpan’!. The writing of ‘Anpan’ makes me realize how hard his job is. You’ve done everything you could do, Yamazaki…
There are many photo spots in the Gintama area. The area is a showcase of the Gintama world. I can’t stop laughing. I’m going to count how many justaways there are next time I’m here. You can find some of them from my photos.
And now, the wait is over: Here is the Naruto area!
I'm a good-for-nothing otaku who works as a freelance web writer.
I live in Kyoto, Japan, but I am so often in Tokyo for anime-related cafes and products that people frequently misunderstood that I live there. Yowamushi Pedal helps me overcome all difficulties. I'm also a huge fan of Touken Ranbu! In order to deliver to you the latest otaku info and trends, I'll keep dwelling in the 2-D world. Thank you very much!
