Maaya Uchida, one of the most popular voice-actress singers today, held her second one-man concert ‘Smiling Spiral’ at Yoyogi National Stadium First Gymnasium on 25-26 February. About 13,000 fans filled the concert hall, and they roared with joy from beginning to end watching Uchida’s powerful performance.
Both days, fans made a long line in front of the gymnasium way before the doors opened, and many of them were wearing the uniforms and holding the megaphones both sold as concert goods.
The concert started out with a narration by Uchida, ‘Maaya Uchida 2nd LIVE Smiling Spiral!’ When the introduction of her first song Shiny drive, Moony dive started playing, Uchida appeared from the center of the stage on a red open-top car. After singing three songs nonstop, Uchida started her first talking segment by shouting out ‘Otokonoko-! (Boys!)’ and ‘Onnanoko-! (Girls!)’ with her fans responding in roars. In the following songs, many entertaining aspects were included, such as Uchida’s singing performance on a trolley train, beautiful laser illuminations, and dance performances made by Uchida and the background dancers. One of the most unique stage effects was the visual flame effects, which changed its shape and color in accordance with the dance performance. The fans were filled with excitement at this stage effect, and they all energetically waved their red penlights in response.
At some point, an enormous Japanese drum was brought up on the stage. Drum players with a small drum and hand drum also came up on the stage, and they all started a drum performance. Finally, Uchida appeared wearing a kimono-like dress with geishas standing on both sides. Uchida sang her following two songs, Moratorium Dance Floor and Karappo Capsule (Empty Capsule), which were both performed in a special collaboration version between the band and the Japanese drums. During her next song, Cross Fire, there was a performance by Uchida in which she batted balls towards the audience, and her fans all cheered with excitement.
One of the most fascinating performances was made during Gimme! Revolution. The LED lighting tool, Graphic Poi, was used in the juggling performance, and by using this device, the words ‘MAAYA’ and ‘Smiling Spiral’ were lighted up, almost as if they were floating in the air. The fans were surprised and fascinated by this performance, and their excitement reached its peak.
After singing all her songs, Uchida’s fans started to chant for an encore. Then Uchida came back on stage wearing the concert’s limited-edition T-shirt. She happily shouted out to the audience, ‘I am sooo happy!’ She also announced that her fifth single CD will be released in the near future. The song and lyrics will be made by ZAQ. On the second day of her concert, Uchida had additionally announced that the B-side of her fifth single will feature Sumire Uesaka, and this made the fans roar with joy. Uchida happily sang Hello, future contact! as her encore song, and left the stage.
However, the fans started to chant ‘Mou Ikkai! (One more time!)’, and once again, Uchida showed up in front of her audience. She shouted out to her fans, ‘I really love all of you from the bottom of my heart! I really don’t want to end this concert!’ As her true final song, Uchida sang Smiling Spiral, the song which was used for this concert’s title. The live concert was filled with energy until the very end, and ended in great success.
