The Sound! Euphonium Official Brass Band Concert by Kitauji High School Brass Band was held at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall On November 20.
TV anime Sound! Euphonium is a popular series that started broadcasting its first season in April, 2015 and its second season in October, 2016. It features the Kitauji High School Brass Band and their passion towards music.
There were two performances held; one during the day and one at night, which is also the one we attended.
Freshman Wind Ensemble 2014 of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, located in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, performed the parts used in the anime. The conductor was Masahiro Owada. Matsuzawa Chiaki, a free announcer known among Japanese anime fans, was selected as the MC. Also, Minako Kotobuki of Asuka Tanaka appeared on the stage as a guest. Shigeru Saito (Lantis), a music producer of the Sound! Euphonium series, was selected as a commentator.
The venue was packed with all 2400 seats filled!
First, they performed DREAM SOLISTER (Wind Orchestra Ver.), the opening theme of the first season. Tuba-kun also appeared on stage and with a light, refreshing performance befitted to a beginning song, I was able to feel a quiet excitement from the stage. They performed 17 songs in total. Most of them were from the series: Jigoku no Orpheus, Bichu no Bi, Ai wo Mitsuketa Basho, etc.
TRUE, who is singing the opening theme for both first and second seasons, appeared as a guest as well. She mesmerized the audience by singing DREAM SOLISTER (Movie ver.) and Tutti (Wind Orchestra Ver.) with her relaxing voice.
They also performed two versions of the Abarenbo Shogun’s theme song and Kaiheitai. The first is the version without Mr. Taki’s instruction and the second is without Mr. Taki’s instruction. Without Mr. Taki’s instruction, each part seems to be fighting with each other and it’s rather displeasing to listen to them. On the other hand, with Mr. Taki’s instruction, they created a perfect harmony with wonderful liveliness. Their poor performance is, of course, the performance for the series. It’s said that it is difficult to play it this poorly. For such a bad performance, the audience gave the warmest applause, since they knew it was done according to the version played in the series.
