The Saiyuki FESTA 2017 ~Key Frame Exhibition was held at Makuhari Messe on January 7 and 8, 2017. Two talk shows were hosted on stage on January 7, one in the morning and one in the evening. The guest were Toshihiko Seki (Genjou Sanzou), Souichirou Hoshi (Son Gokuu), Hiroaki Hirata (Sha Gojou), and Akira Ishida (Cho Hakkai), as well as Hidenori Tokuyama, the singer of the opening themes.
Here is a report on the day-time talk show!
‘Ura-sai’ chanting back again after several years on hiatus
The four main cast members showed up right at the start of the talk show. It had been a while since they had gathered together as the Sanzou party, but they sounded perfectly in sync as if they had been together all these years, leading the audience back to the Saiyuki world we had missed.
The first part of the show started with playback videos of our favorite scenes from the old footage as requested by fans. They also introduced some of the original key frames. The four speakers commented on each famous scene, looking back on the days they had these recordings. They were nostalgic, and revealed some backstage stories that they haven’t told us about before.
Each of the four voice actors told us their most memorable anecdotes from the past. Seki mentioned how they were once forced to eat horrible sushi made by Hoshi on the radio program Radio Saiyuki, and they all bust into laughter. Ishida commented on the big difference between the main story’s seriousness and the completely playful gags at the end of each episode. They started talking about ‘Ura-sai,’ the farcical part shown after the ending of every episode of Saiyuki RELOAD.
Since all four were gathered after such a long time, they decided to revive the ‘Ura-sai’ chanting together. As they shouted ‘Urasai~,’ the audience let out a huge cheer.
Seki, Hirata, and their Defeat in Telepathy
After such heartwarming and nostalgic talks, the show went into the game talk corner, ‘Ishin-denshin (telepathy) game.’
Seki teamed up with Hirata, and Hoshi with Ishida. The two pairs competed against each other at this game. The rule of the game: they were asked questions such as ‘What would you like to bring with you on a journey?’ and ‘What would you do if you managed to stop the resurrection of the Ox-Demon-King, Gyumaoh?’ and each of them would write down their answers on boards separately. If the pair had the same answer, they got 10 points.
Hearing that the winner of the game would receive a catalog gift worth 30,000 yen, Hirata got really fired up, saying ‘I’m definitely going to win it! 30,000 yen gift!?’ Seki and Hirata showed their perfect teamwork and accumulated points till the very end.
However, in the end they were defeated. The last question applied a special rule to give 100 points (instead of normal 10 points) to the winner, and the question was ‘Who is the arch-nemesis of Sanzou Party?’ Hoshi and Ishida had the same answer, of course: ‘Kougaiji’!
On the other hand, Seki wrote down ‘Hajime Takakuwa,’ the name of the sound director, and Hirata wrote down ‘God.’ The two started insisting on a weird meta-logic, ‘You know, the director is like a god to us, so our answers actually matched!’ but of course nobody was convinced!
The first half of the show ended with the game. After the guests left the stage, the audience watched video messages celebrating the 20th anniversary of the show. Takeshi Kusao, VA for Kougaiji, and Hajime Takakuwa, the sound director, as well as the cast of its live-action musical adaptation: Hiroki Suzuki, who performed Genjou Sanzou, and Taizou Shiina, who performed Son Gokuu, all appeared in the video messages.
