Chika Umino’s popular manga 3-gatsu no Lion anime adaptation is handled by Akiyuki Shinbou and the animation production company SHAFT.
The preview of episode 01 was held at NHK in Shibuya, Tokyo on September 23. Several voice actors, including Kengo Kawanishi and Nobuhiko Okamoto, and Producer Mitsutoshi Kubota took part in the press conference.
Fans are interested in finding out how Director Shinbou (Monogatari series, Magical Girl Madoka☆Magica, and others) who is known for his unique movie expression will express Umino’s work. One of the press members asked if Director Shimbou and Umino’s work actually go along.
Producer Kubota (SHAFT) answered that Umino requested Shinbou to be assigned as the director. They are communicating closely in order to express a gentle, kind world, worthy of the original work.
You will understand it once you see the first episode.
The chapter 1 from episode 1 almost doesn’t have any serif at all. The original work doesn’t have much serif either so you can say that it’s just following the original, but anime without serif seems a bit risky (No serif for 9 minutes).
Kengo Kawanishi got worried about the lack of serif but commented that “there are great music and performances that will keep your interest”. Nobuhiko Okamoto also commented that “it’s a fantastic animation using silence, feeling and atmosphere for expressions.
Director Shimbou closed the event with a comment:
‘You all already know about 3-gatsu no Lion but we are striving on this new challenge to make the work seen by wider generations.’
The human drama and the attractive characters can be enjoyed even if you don’t know anything about shogi.
It will be broadcast by NHK Sogo at 11:00 p.m. on October 8.
