As a Tokyo-based writer, I will introduce you to various aspects of pop culture such as manga, anime, movies and music. I want to spread the joy of Japanese pop culture around the world.
Hey, everyone! This is Mokugyo, the manga-and-anime-loving writer from MANGA.TOKYO, and I am reporting from AnimeJapan 2017! The popular event may be over, but we still have a lot of reports just for you!
The 2016 movie Shin Godzilla directed by Hideaki Anno, who is also famous for directing Neon Genesis Evangelion, has become a big hit in Japan. Fans of the King of Monsters had been waiting for the release of a new Godzilla movie for years. Now, it has been announced that a new Godzilla movie is to be released in 2017, and this time it will be a computer-animated film! The title of this movie is GODZILLA: Kaijuu Wakusei (GODZILLA: Monster Planet). For the first time in the series, the story is to take place on a future Earth! The film will have no connections with Shin Godzilla, and it will be a completely new story!
Today, I would like to report on ‘GODZILLA Kaijuu Wakusei Stage’, the Godzilla event held at the Red Stage at AnimeJapan 2017!
As the stage event started, a promotional video of the ‘GODZILLA Project’ was shown on the big screen. In this video, the director, Hiroyuki Seshita, commented that becoming the director was ‘the happiest offer to get, and yet, the biggest pressure ever.’ The scriptwriter, Gen Urobuchi, mentioned, ‘It will be a non-special-effects Godzilla movie. Godzilla will romp around in a never-before-seen future world!’
The guests on the stage were: Yuuki Kaji (Adam Bindewald), Takahiro Sakurai (Metphies), Tomokazu Sugita (Martin Lazzari), Junichi Suwabe (Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu), Kana Hanazawa (Yuko Tani), and Mamoru Miyano (protagonist, Haruo Sakaki). The fans loudly roared with joy, especially when Mamoru Miyano came up on the stage.
During the segment to introduce each character, Miyano was asked about what he and his character Haruo have in common, ‘We’re both humans.’ This made the fans burst out in laughter. Miyano also mentioned that this new story was created on a huge scale only possible through animation, and he revealed that the setting will even go to outer space. He strongly emphasized that the film illustrates a never-before-seen Godzilla. He also added that his character is a man who feels intense hatred for Godzilla, as the monster killed his parents. The psychology of the characters will also be shown in great detail, and Miyano guaranteed that the viewers would be able to empathize with the characters. The movie is to have a spectacular world, both physically and mentally.
When Miyano was asked about how he felt when he got the movie’s offer, he answered that he was very surprised that Godzilla was to be adapted into an anime film.
‘I was so surprised that I thought someone was playing a prank on me! I was afraid that at that very moment, my chair would break apart and I’d fall into a pool or something.’ He explained his astonishment with comical expressions. He then mentioned how strongly he felt that the realization of this film would only be possible via animation. He expressed his happiness to join a Godzilla film and to take part in creating something new.
Hanazawa revealed that when she first got the offer, she was given tons of papers about the movie’s settings. From these materials, she had strongly felt the staff’s passion towards this movie. She also mentioned how her younger brother had always been a Godzilla fan, and she herself had felt some sort of connection with the series, for she was once told that she resembles Minilla, a character from Godzilla. Hanazawa explained that the movie was pre-scored, which means the recording of the voices and sound effects happened before filming, and she was anxious to see the completed animation.
Suwabe, on the other hand, mentioned how he first found it difficult to record without the anime and the music. He could not come up with visual images inside his head for some of the scenes just by reading the script. He had to kept on confirming with the director.
At one point during the event, the host suddenly announced that they would show some scenes from the movie!
The trailer was very short and the scenes were not the completed version, but, nevertheless, it made it obvious that the movie will be a fascinating sci-fi action story! At the end of this short video, the word ‘Trilogy’ appeared, and it was revealed that the movie would be made in three parts. It was the first time for not only the fans, but also for the cast members to see this trailer, and everyone cheered!
The event finished successfully with a photo session at the very end. Even during this photo session, Mamoru Miyano and the other cast members made the fans laugh by striking a Godzilla pose.
