The movie Genocidal Organ (Gyakusatsu Kikan) is the final installment of an ongoing project whose purpose is to adapt the late sci-fi writer Project Itoh’s three novels into anime movies. On February 4, in commemoration of the movie’s release, the two main voice actors Yuichi Nakamura and Takahiro Sakurai showed up on stage to greet the audience.
Genocidal Organ is the third movie to be released after the previously-released Project Itoh movies The Empire of Corpses and Harmony. In order to capture the mysterious linguist John Paul who sets off wars all around the world, a U.S special forces soldier named Clavis Shepherd sets off on a journey together with his comrades to seek John Paul .
The movie has finally been released after experiencing a sudden postponement due to the bankruptcy of the production firm. Nakamura commented, ‘Although we had to keep all the fans waiting, I too couldn’t wait to see the movie.’ According to Nakamura, although he visited the movie theater on the movie’s opening day, he thought it would be strange for the cast to watch the movie on the first day and for that reason, he ended up watching some other movie.
Sakurai commented, ‘While we have suffered lots of difficulties, I’m pleased to be able to finally celebrate the release. I’m sure there must be lots of people feeling even more relieved than us. We did the voice recording last year, so I feel pretty nostalgic.’
In the real world, the Trump administration has been established in the U.S. There has been a lot of ceaseless controversy caused by his remarks and actions. Recently, the current minister of Defense from the Trump administration, James Mattis (nicknamed mad dog) visited Japan. Nakamura and Sakurai shared their thoughts on this timely release of the movie:
(Nakamura) ‘I hope he won’t find out we are making these kinds of things in Japan’
(Sakurai) ‘While the movie was postponed, it turned out be the best timing for the release I guess.’
When asked the question ‘This is the type of movie that gets us thinking about various things afterwards. What word would you pick to describe the movie?’ Sakurai then responded with ‘I would pick “honesty”. Although it’s a pretty simple word, I think this is the best word I can find. In this movie, we can see some honest feelings inside our mind that we usually choose not to let out. I think they could be Mr. Project Itoh’s true feelings.’ Nakamura said ‘The first thing I thought of after reading the original novel was “death”. A view of life and death. So many people die in the movie but each of them have their own way of dying. Since I have never lost people close to me, it is difficult for me to feel a real sense of death. However, Clavis always faces death through his missions. I think the work depicts a concept of death that is not necessarily negative.’
Genocidal Organ is currently playing at theaters in Japan.
