Commemorating the release of Genocidal Organ (Gyakusatsu Kikan) on February 3, Odaiba Cinema Mediage held the movie’s premiere screening event on January 28, 2017. Yuuichi Nakamura (Clavis Shepherd), Takahiro Sakurai (John Paul), Satoshi Mikami, Kaito Ishikawa, and the movie’s producer Kouji Yamoto joined the stage for a special greeting.
‘Project Itoh’ is a project that aims to produce anime-film adaptations of the three novels written by author Project Itoh (Itoh Keikaku). The project will be completed with the release of Itoh’s maiden work, Genocidal Organ, followed by The Empire of Corpses (Shisha no Teikoku). The story takes place in a world with advanced nations under repressive administrative structure and underdeveloped countries with civil wars and massacres. It is a sci-fi story about the ‘genocidal organ’ inside human bodies which becomes the trigger to kill people.
Due to unforeseen problems, the project was almost shut down, but the determination of the staff managed to bring it to completion. When Nakamura was asked about his thoughts on the movie, he answered, ‘I did remember the outline of the story, but (since the dubbing was in January 2015), when I actually saw the completed work, I felt “Was it like this? Did I say it like that?,” and I was able to watch it with fresh feelings.’ Sakurai pointed out the depth of the movie’s theme by commenting, ‘This story really gets us thinking. I’m pretty sure there would be people whose views on life will change after watching it.’ Mikami mentioned, ‘I am relieved, and I feel happy that we were finally able to adapt the story into a movie.’ Yamamoto, who established a new animation studio from scratch just for Genocidal Organ, commented, ‘When we were creating the movie, sometimes I even felt that everything might be much easier if I just quit, but I just knew I had to continue. My life as a producer was at stake, so I put all my effort in every little aspect. To tell you the truth, the movie was only completed yesterday morning. And because of all the effort put in, I think we were able to create a masterpiece.’
The voice actors also gave their comments on the characters. Nakamura mentioned, ‘Clavis is like the typical “general person.” His viewpoint is closer to the movie viewers. I was able to act him from a neutral stance.’ Sakurai, who played the voice of the key character John Paul, mentioned, ‘John Paul first shows up as the mysterious bad guy who is called the “King of Genocide.” I would like the viewers to pay special attention to what happens after his encounter with Clavis.’
During the talk on-stage, the guests were asked the question: ‘What kind of a “special organ” do you have?’ Nakamura, who loves playing online games, answered, ‘I’m sure the government has implanted an “organ to pay for items on online games” inside our bodies. I keep on hoping that I would win a better in-game item next time I try, and end up spending a lot of money every month. I know I shouldn’t, but I just can’t stop.’ Ishikawa answered, ‘Whenever someone praises me, I can’t stop thinking “What are their intentions? What kind of benefits would they have for making me feel good? Am I even worth that?” and so on. I think I have a “Negative Organ”.’ That comment made the audience burst out in laughter.
And finally, Nakamura finished the greeting session by saying, ‘For the fans who love the original work, I hope they enjoy the difference between the original and the movie adaptation. And for those who learned about the story for the first time from the anime movie, I hope they feel the message that Itoh weaved into the original story.’
