The movie Genocidal Organ (Gyakusatsu Kikan) was adapted from the famous sci-fi writer Project Itoh’s debut novel and was finally released in Japanese movie theaters on February 3. On the movie’s opening day, a special all night event was held to show all the 3 works from Project Itoh, including Empire of Corpses and Harmony.
At the venue (TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku), the producer Koji Yamamoto and SF Magazine’s editor-in-chief Yoshihiro Shiozawa appeared on stage and talked about behind-the-scenes stories.
Genocidal Organ suffered lots of hardships until it was finally completed, especially with the sudden bankruptcy of its original production firm. The movie’s production was taken over by the newly-established studio, Geno Studio. Geno Studio’s CEO Yamamoto shared with the audience his current thoughts while showing his perfect confidence in the work’s quality, ‘Ever since I saw the images for the voice recording process, I was fully convinced that it would be an awesome work and I found myself seeing it from the audience’s perspective. Near the end of last year, I began to feel worried about whether or not we could really make it in time, but I was sure of the work’s quality as long as we could get complete illustrations and images. That’s because the storyboard already looked pretty incredible on-screen.’
Shiozawa, who edited the original novel, also expressed his confidence in the work’s quality ‘The voice dubbing sessions were conducted about two years ago and at that time, I was pretty impressed with the storyboards I’d seen. It was a nice surprise to find out that the movie turned out to be not so different from what I saw back then.’ When asked a question about the original writer Project Itoh’s outstanding aspects, he said, ‘He is such a great storyteller. There are the characters’ own voices in it and these voices are not created to simply carry forward the story. I wonder if this was Itoh’s strong desire to survive his illness. I don’t think there are many writers with that kind of strength.’
He also made a comment on the recent rumors about a live-action movie adaptation, ‘That’s just a hoax. However, the project might still continue…’
On February 16 at TOHO CINEMAS Nihonbashi, there will be a special talk event titled ‘The World of Project Itoh’ (Ito Keikaku no Sekai). The event is scheduled to have professor Kazuo Okanoya (Tokyo University) as a guest. He will talk with Shiozawa about Project Itoh from various points of view.
