Hi guys, it’s Emi here.
‘Funassyi Café’, collaborating with Funassyi, has opened for a limited time in Osaka.
I attended its pre-opening party held on the day before the opening as well as its actual opening day. I’m going to tell you all about them in this report.
A surprise guest showed up on the grand opening day!
‘Delicious to eat and fun to look at’ café menu: A pre-opening party filled with Funassyi world
Shinsaibashi 161 ‘The Guest café & diner’ is a café which collaborates with various trends and contents.
Following the success of Kiki & Lala theme, the second one is all about ‘Funassyi’.
Funassyi is a fairy like mascot character in a nashi pear shape. It is known as a Yuru-chara and certainly very popular in Japan.
Yuru-chara is a mascot category for cute, cuddly and laid back characters.
Funassyi is treated as a superstar, often seen on variety shows and commercials on TV as well as different events. Unlike a typical Yuru-chara, Funassyi moves quickly and talks rhythmically in high-pitched tones. It attracts fans by uniquely adding ‘nassyi’ at the end of every sentence.
Funassyi Cafe is not only a café, but also a collaboration with such a popular character.
Wherever in Japan, it recorded a remarkable number of visitors. Now, this ‘Funassyi Café ‘ is finally open in Osaka!
I was lucky enough to get invited to its pre-opening party, so let me show you what it is like inside.
Playful menu limited to Osaka
In the Osaka branch, you’ll see many unique items on the menu, which are limited to Osaka.
Funassyi’s Slurp! Udon with No Soup ¥1,480
This is udon without soup. So cute!
You can pour the soup over udon or squeeze some Kabosu citrus fruit on it to enjoy the different tastes of udon.
The bottle with this soup is free to take home as a souvenir.
By the way, this menu is called ‘Shiru nashi udon’ (udon without soup) and it’s a pun on a word of nashi (Asian pear) that Funassyi is named after.
The word ‘Nashi’ has both meanings of ‘Asian pear’ and ‘no/without’. It’s a play on words, isn’t it? Osaka is considered as the most famous comedy haven in Japan, and I think this wordplay is so typical of Osaka.
This is one of the most popular items on the menu, called Funassyi Burger. Normally, a beef patty is inside a burger, but instead, you see this Herekatsu, Osaka’s special dish.
Herekatsu is a beef fillet cutlet. The cutlet becomes tender in thick pear marinade.
The top half of the bun has Funassyi’s face on it. The bottom one is in blue, precisely representing Funassyi’s color. It’s very well done and there is nothing to complain about!
Funassyi’s Parfait-like Shaved Ice- Accompanied with Fluffy Anglaise Sauce with Nashi Juice – ★It comes with a Funassyi balloon to take home★ ¥1,380
This is another sensational dessert. It’s Funassyi’s parfait-like shaved ice with milky pear anglaise sauce.
Under the shaved ice, there are generous layers of granola, ice cream and almond jelly.
Somehow, you’ll get a small plate of pickles when you order this. Apparently, it’s there as a refreshment. It may seem odd to have both shaved ice and pickles…Anyhow, this dessert is perfect for the hot summer coming up!
Takoyaki that Funassyi Requested Me to Buy (Octopus Balls-like bite-size cakes) ¥500
They are bite-size cakes look like octopus balls called Takoyaki. Their subtle sweetness is perfect!
This menu ‘Takoyaki that Funassyi Requested Me to Buy’ is actually a response to what Funassyi tweeted 2 years ago.
‘Hey, you there. Can you go get me some Takoyaki?’
Funassyi loves Takoyaki, and so he asked one of his staff, ‘Hey, you there. (。゜▽゜)
Can you go get me some Takoyaki?’
To make Funassyi’s wish come true after 2 years, they created the menu called ‘Takoyaki that Funassyi Requested Me to Buy’.
Waiting for 2 long years, Funassyi’s wish really came true. (。゜▽゜)
’You (。゜▽゜), Can You Go Get Me Takoyaki?’ ¥300
Actually, there is a menu based exactly on Funassyi’s tweet. Here are the real Takoyaki, octopus balls.
Takoyaki is originally from Osaka and considered as a soul food for people there. Japanese people often eat it as a snack.
Original menu items from Funassyi Café
Other than the items limited to Osaka, there are a lot of café original items on the menu.
I can just mention only a small part of those, but they are all almost too cute to eat♩
What do you see when you cut Nashi? Illusion Funassyi ¥1,280
Here is my number one recommendation!
When you lift up a nashi-like lid, you see a cake called Mont Blanc but with the Funassyi decoration. It’s misty and magical, isn’t it? This is totally an illusion.
You should check out the back of this Funassyi Mont Blanc.
At the back of Mont Blanc, there is a zipper-like decoration, designed after Funassyi’s costume. It’s so detailed and impressive.
Oh, I’d better make it right. Funassyi is a fairy of a nashi pear, and it is definitely not a person wearing a costume.
The zipper on its back is an illusion.
No Meat Plate ★comes with Funassyi original bowl ¥1,880
Funassyi Café Original Kids Plate ★It comes with Funassyi balloon★ ¥1,280
Wibbly Wobbly Nassyi! Funassyi’s Wibbly Puddingヾ(。゜▽゜)ノ★It comes with Funassyi original bowl ¥1,880
’You have to eat it quick, or it’ll disappear!!’ Piping Hot Danish with Ice Cream★It comes with Funassyi balloon★ ¥1,280
Funassyi’s disappearing!? Funassyi’s Illusion Soda ¥880
Fluffy Iced Latte ¥880
It’s not all about food. You can experience the full Funassyi World!
This café doesn’t just offer you food.
Throughout the café, there are various details to enjoy Funassyi’s worldview.
As you walk into the café, a photo session booth comes into your sight first.
You can take a photo with illustrated Funassyi dressed as a waiter.
Inside the café, there are Funassyi themed sofa and soft toys.
You can relax on the sofa or take photos with the soft toys. There is so much fun even while waiting for your order.
The big Funassyi soft toy on the right is not for sale, and you can only see it there. That Funassyi was bouncy and cuddly, and it left me such a nice warm feeling.
There is a good variety of souvenirs, too.
This is the original paper placemat that you can get when you order the food.
Here are the coasters that come with drinks. You get a randomly chosen one out of four designs.
There is also a shop in the café. You can get unique goods that are only limited to this place, so make sure you check it out!
