An official limited-time cafe of 3-Gatsu No Lion has opened its doors in Marunouchi reading style cafe (Chiyoda district, Tokyo). The cafe will be open from October 9 to December 30.
3-Gatsu No Lion is a shogi-themed comic series by Chika Umino which has been serialized in Young Animal since 2007. A live action version is schedule to be released in March 2017 followed by the anime version that’s currently broadcast via NHK General TV. The anime production is handled by Shaft and Akiyuki Shinbo is hired as a director/series composer.
The cafe’s interesting interior decoration was created in such a way so that customers can fully enjoy the work’s worldview. There is an original illustration by the anime’s character designer Nobuhiro Sugiyama at the front entrance.
There are so many interesting things placed everywhere inside the shop, giving off a warm atmosphere: shogi pieces and paw prints of Kawamoto family’s cats on the tables!
There are life-sized panels of Rei Kiriyama and the three sisters from the Kawamoto family for private photos. The screenshots from the TV anime put inside the shop will be updated on a weekly basis.
You also can’t miss the signatures on the bottom of the coasters, written by Chika Umino, Akiyuki Shinbo, and the voice cast members. There are character introductory panels on display at the counter by the window, where we can clearly see trains passing through Tokyo station. The shop offers enticing food based on the home-made dishes seen in the anime, as well as drinks and sweets featuring the anime’s characters.
Those who order in the shop can get a 3-Gatsu No Lion special badge or a coaster for free. As for the special character badge, there are four different variations and there will be more illustrations available in the end of November. This cafe can be enjoyed by both the anime fans and those who still don’t know much about the series.
One of the great things that makes us want to revisit the cafe is that the exhibits inside will be renewed. There are also so many delicious dishes and sweets such as the ones that appeared in the first episode (Akari’s curry, Akari’s Kakuni, Kawamoto family’s Anmitsu). Nya’s cookies can be a great souvenir as you can get it to go. Don’t miss on any of these original merchandise!
On the opening day (October 9), there was already a long line-up at 7 a.m., four hours before the opening time. This lineup swelled to 50 people by 9 a.m.
