Hello! This is Ayumi, otaku writer for MANGA.TOKYO!
Japanese snacks are so versatile and unique, and it’s not easy to choose just one, right? Today, I’m going to introduce you to some anime snacks and other food products that you can purchase from supermarkets and convenience stores.
Let’s start with Pokémon products that have become popular since the recent release of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon! They are all pretty delicious, so don’t underestimate them! Which one would you like to try?
Pokémon Sun and Moon! Here is the Pokémon product line-up!
First is Marumiya Foods retort-pouch curry, which comes with a Pokémon sticker! This is the X&Y version curry, but I think it’s going to be switched to Sun & Moon stickers soon. So, the X&Y version products may only be available while the stock lasts. There are 40 different stickers out there…Which one did I get this time…?
I got Tyrunt (Chigoras)!
The packet says ‘it’s delicious as it is!’, so I didn’t heat it up. It is a delicious curry. The good thing is that you can eat it straight out of the pouch. It’s not spicy at all, so I suppose it’s more for kids. If you are following a religious dietary practice, please be aware that the curry contains pork.
Next up is furikake, which is a dry seasoning that you sprinkle on top of cooked rice. When you sprinkle furikake, the otherwise bland rice turns into something special! It’s often accompanied with rice in a lunch box. The best part of this furikake is that it is all individually packed!
Each packet has a different character! Wooow, even Mewtwo!
I used to take a lunch box to school with me, and often begged my mother to buy me this kind of furikake. [laugh] I remember the warm and fuzzy feeling when I saw my favorite character on a packet. Each packet tastes the same, but your mood somehow changes by having a different character. You can also purchase furikake in Yokai Watch and Precure versions.
This one comes with a sticker, too! I got Chespin (Harimaron)!
You can even find non-alcoholic champagne for kids with a Pokémon design. It’s only soda pop inside…
The bottle looks like a wine bottle, but with cute stickers. I’m pretty certain that every child will love this on occasions like Christmas or special celebrations. This is an alcohol-free drink and safe for children.
Other anime-related products
Wow! This wafer is already in the Pokémon Sun & Moon version! Many of you play this game, am I right? It might be fun to collect all 24 stickers.
There are many other anime wafers out there, such as One Piece, Yowamushi Pedal and Bikkuriman. I am sure you can find one you like.
Regarding the texture and taste, this is almost similar to Kit Kat, but without the chocolate coating. You may have to buy way too many wafers to collect the stickers…but you can always keep the wafers in a plastic wrap in the fridge. You don’t have to eat them all at once! No matter how long you keep them in the fridge, they will taste as delicious as if they were freshly taken out of the package! I’m 100% sure about this, because I’ve done it before. One time I bought 30 wafers at once. Don’t judge me.
Here is Chocobi from BANDAI, a well-known snack in the anime Crayon Shin-chan. You may feel like Shin-chan when you eat this!
Chocobi is a chocolate snack with a light crispy texture inside that makes you want to keep munching. The outer package is just like the one in the anime! You just can’t miss this bright green box on the supermarket shelf.
This is Precure curry, which is also from Marumiya Foods just like the Pokémon one. The surprise in this curry pack is slightly different…a glitter sticker! No wonder kids beg for this…These are amazingly pretty. I can imagine some kids showing off their big collection of these glitter stickers to others.
Anything for girls must have glitter…that has to be a never-fail rule. The inside of the pouch is not that different from the Pokémon curry. Again, please be aware that this also contains pork.
This is one of my top picks…Anpanman gummies! It costs only ¥70, but they are really good.
The character-shaped gummies are stuck on a sheet, so you peel each gummy off the sheet. This sensation of ‘peeling’ is very addictive. On top of this, the rich grape flavor is nothing like a normal ¥70 snack and you’ll soon be hooked on it! It doesn’t come with any goodies, but the gummy shapes are all different in each pack. They are delicious, but they don’t take much room in your bag. They make great souvenirs for your friends!
Similarly, you can get gummies in the Kamen Rider version. Every year, they come up with new Kamen Rider characters, so the packaging of the gummies also changes in accordance with the series.
You can easily purchase these products in supermarkets and/or convenience stores!
It is so easy to find these products mentioned above in supermarkets/convenience stores wherever you are in Japan. They are so tasty and they also come with cute surprises. It’s really hard to resist! These products are also not bulky and they are great options for souvenirs if you want to pack them in your suitcase! It’s definitely an amazing thing to gift to little kids. [laugh] Please check them out the next time you visit Japan!

I'm a good-for-nothing otaku who works as a freelance web writer.
I live in Kyoto, Japan, but I am so often in Tokyo for anime-related cafes and products that people frequently misunderstood that I live there. Yowamushi Pedal helps me overcome all difficulties. I'm also a huge fan of Touken Ranbu! In order to deliver to you the latest otaku info and trends, I'll keep dwelling in the 2-D world. Thank you very much!
