Hello! I am Kitahata, the editor-in-chief at MANGA.TOKYO. I live in Japan and turn press releases from Japanese companies into articles that are easy for those outside of Japan to understand. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me!
The full cast of the live action movie adaptation of Sui Ishida’s manga Tokyo Ghoul has been announced!
Kunio Murai will be playing Yoshimura Kuzen, the owner of café and ghoul sanctuary, ‘Anteiku.’ Cast as Enji Koma, a waiter at Anteiku, is Kenta Hamano, and the waitress Kaya Irimi is played by Nozomi Sasaki. Renji Yomo will play Shuntaro Yanagi, Hinami Fueguchi is portrayed by Hiyori Sakurada, and Ryoko Fueguchi will play Shoko Aida.
Tokyo Ghoul is scheduled to be released in Japanese cinemas on 29 July 2017. Directing the movie is Kentaro Hagiwara. Ichiro Kusuruno wrote the screenplay.
‘Ghouls are creatures that have to eat human flesh to stay alive. I am sure this fact will make some people feel uncomfortable. But at the bottom of it all is love. With my own sense of justice, I fight because I love my fellow ghouls. You will be impressed by this deep love, I am sure.’
‘I am very happy to be able to participate in this movie. It was fun with everybody of the cast when the scene was a peaceful one, but how hard everybody worked for the action scenes makes me really look forward to the finished product.
Everybody should watch it and get shocked and surprised at the cinema, and please drink my coffee sometimes, to feel better.’
‘Since I have been a big fan of Tokyo Ghoul for a long time and have been reading the manga, I was very honored when they decided to cast me for this movie. Ghouls vs humans and a Ken Kaneki who has two faces. I think it is a very complex story but thought well through, so I can’t wait to see the complete movie.’
‘At first, Yomo Renji seemed very silent and heavy, but I tried to keep in mind that he also is kind at heart.
He taught me the importance of being honest and that life is not about compliments.’
‘While reading the manga, I thought that if this would be turned into a live action, I would want to be Hinami. And my wish was granted! Because Hinami is a pure and gentle child, I played her thinking a lot about what moves her heart. Please look forward to the world of the ghouls, which is filled with the thoughts of so many people!’
‘When I read the original manga, I was unbelievably scared. I was because of a situation that was similar to this one. Just like Kaneki has conflicts, the character I am playing, Ryoko Fueguchi, has some too. I tried to play her properly with all the strength and kindness a mother expresses in conflicts of sorrow and fear. I would be glad to make the viewers literally feel the kindness and fear.’
