The premiere event for the live action movie Saki created by Ritz Kobayashi was held at TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi on January 18, 2017.
The movie is a direct sequel to the TV J-drama which was broadcast last December. Hamabe Minami (Saki Miyanaga from Kiyosumi High School), Nana Asakawa from SUPER☆GiRLS (Nodoka Haramura), Aika Hirota (Yuki Kataoka from Ebisu Private Middle School), Seika Furuhata (Hisa Takei) and Anna Yamada (Mako Someya) appeared on the stage. Also, Natsumi Okamoto (Yumi Kajiki), Ano from Yurumerumo (Momoko Toyoko), Nagao Mariya (Toka Ryumonbuchi) and Hinako Sano (Takako Kubo) came to the event as surprise guests.
Hamabe said with a smile, ‘I was very nervous to have a leading part, but thanks to the support from other cast and staff members, I was able to complete the shooting. I was very happy during this one-month shooting period. I love everyone!’
Cast members talked about the fun behind-the-scenes stories, but then Asakawa said that ‘when we were shooting the scene in the room, we were using the lighting equipment. But then, stink bugs started gathering around the light. Moreover, one of the staff stepped on a stink bug making us shoot in the stinking room for two days.’ In response to this, Hirota commented, ‘we were supposed to be talking about fun stories’!
Hamabe talked said about the cast that ‘they are all kind and funny. Asakawa organized everything and Seika told me funny stories…’ About Ano she said, ‘I asked Ano to let me touch her arm and I thought it was very skinny.’ Members revealed that Hamabe kept saying she wanted to touch Ano’s arm.
At the event, members threw mahjong tiles at the audience instead of pies. Looking at many mahjong tiles prepared on the stage, the cast wondered, ‘can we throw all of them? It’s harder and heavier than expected…’
Yuichi Onuma appeared at the end of the event and said ‘I’ve been in this industry for a long time but this is the best casting. This series is hard to make into a live action movie, but this high-quality cast made me believe that we could do it. Personally, I made this movie 100% for the fans. Please look forward to it!’
Saki features the story of Saki Miyanaga, a new club member for the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club which aims to win the High School Mahjong Tournament. It began serialization in Young Gan Gan (Square Enix) in 2006 and there are 16 volumes available. It was also broadcast on TV as an anime for three separate seasons. The movie will be released throughout Japan on February 3, 2017.
