On March 13th the events “Dengeki Thank You Fest of the Game 2016”, “Celebration of Dengeki Bunko 2016”, and “Dengeki Comic Fest 2016” all took place at the Belle Salle Akihabara and Akihabara UDX. At this event the stage “Sword Art Online” took place with new disclosures making it a big success.
Right from the beginning, the announcement of the film version of “Sword Art Online” release in 2017 was made. The official title “Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal scale” (劇場版 ソードアート・オンライン -オーディナル・スケール-), alongside the teaser PV of the film was also disclosed. Surrounded by cheers the MCs Kazuma Miki and Rina Hidaka took their place back on stage along with a few special guests, what increased the excitement. The special guests were Yoshitsugu Matsuoka who plays the main character Kirito, Kawahara Reki who is the author and script writer of “Sword Art Online”, and Shingo Adachi the total animation director.
The main topic was of course about the upcoming film and its many details, starting with the commentary of the world view’s setting. The title of the film “Ordinal Scale” comes from the new game that is released in the film. In the television series the full drive model VR machine was used, but in the film it will be an updated headphone specified AR MMO RPG (a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role playing game) called “Ogar”, and compared to the VR machine in the television series the new “Ogar” will be much more compact. Furthermore from the presentation from the abec “kakioroshi” confirmed the key visual designs of the machine. Kawahara stated that the device has become much closer to the “neuro linker” from the animation “Accel World”, which takes in a similar setting which is 20 years into the future.
Followed was the showing of the outfits for Kirito and Asuna and it was here where Hidaka asked if Silica one of the characters, would be making an appearance in the film. As if it was known that the question would be asked, Silica’s outfit design was shown on the screen, followed by great cheers from the audience. Out of the heroines from “Sword Art Online” Silica along with Lisbeth have very little appearances, and from the back cover from the original work they are also known as “MORE DEBAN”. With that in mind, Hidaka joked “MORE DEBAN” for the girls which pulled more laughter from the audience.
Adachi also told that the second visuals that he is in charge of is currently in the works. And on the official website as well as at the “Sakura Con 2016” it was also announced on March 26th that it would take place in the U.S.
Announced was also information about the pre-selling of the film tickets. It was mentionedthat they will be available at the Aniplex booth at the “Anime Japan 2016” on March 26th and 27th along with bonus posters.
After the information about the film, Futami Yousuke (the producer from Bandai Namco Entertainment) was called onto stage to talk about the new game “Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization”. With the game announcement came the first public screening of the game PV, the disclosure of the release date, and also the announcement that the premium cast playing a young mysterious NPC girl will be played by Yuiko Tatsumi. Matsuoka noted he was in the midst of recording and that he went already 10 times to recordings which surprised many of the audience at how much he had already done.
Followed was the disclosure of the IBM collaboration project “Sword Art Online: the beginning”, and IBM’s Yamaguchi and 1→10’s Ogawa was called up to talk about the project in which a cloud service called “Soft Layer” will be used to experience the Sword Art Online World. Along with this announcement came the first public showing of the visuals and subsequently an additional recruiting for an already closed recruitment for the alpha testers took place. The stage was closed with messages from the cast. Matsuoka stated that he is very happy that Sword Art Online is loved not only in Japan but globally as well, and he also said with passion “please look forward to the upcoming film and the expansion of Sword Art Online!” With this message and with a large applause, the Sword Art Online event ended.
