Hello! It’s MANGA.TOKYO’s writer Yukki, and I bring you the report of anime movieSword Art Online -Ordinal Scale-special stage which took place during AnimeJapan 2017 on Saturday 25 March 2017.
The anime movie Sword Art Online -Ordinal Scale- has been released all over the world, including North America, Asia, and Europe. Foreign language dubs are also due to be released. It was recently announced that overseas attendance has surpassed 700,000 people!
The event took place on AnimeJapan’s biggest stage, the RED Stage. Out of all the stages, this event had the most people attending. It had a very successful talk segment related to the anime movie, and a surprise live concert at the end!
Plans to do Stage Greetings more than 50 times?!
The guests at the stage event were Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito), Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna), Kanae Ito (Yui), Rina Hidaka (Silica), Ayahi Takagaki (Lisbeth), and Ayana Taketatsu (Leafa).
Matsuoka wore an all-black costume similar to that of his character. When the line ‘Ordinal Scale, Start Up!’ was said and the greetings began, the female cast members, for some reason, gathered together and started a private meeting. The greetings order were to be decided by Matsuoka, so the ladies gathered to decide whether to say their lines. The audience laughed at the explanation. In the end, the greetings finaly began after everyone said ‘Ordinal Scale, Start Up!’ together. They also discussed the fact that Yui, Silica, Lisbeth have never said this line before! It was a great treat to the people who gathered at the event and a rare experience that invited a thunderous applause each time they said it.
There have been many stage greetings for this movie, and the star, Matsuoka, revealed that he had already done 27 stage greetings and was only halfway through. The cast members would share pictures in the group LINE chat of the delicious food they ate in every area there was a stage event. I’m sure I’m not the only fan who thought, ‘I want to see that group chat’.
If there were a feature hidden in Augma, what would it be?
In the ‘Augma Research Room’ corner, the cast used flip charts to answer the question ‘If there were a hidden feature or an unknown way to use the augmented reality information terminal that appears in the movie, what would it be?’
Takagaki raised her hand faster than anyone else and drew a picture of a bear (kuma) and called it ‘Big bear (ohguma, pronounced the same as ‘Augma’) search’. With a version upgrade, it becomes ‘Small bear (koguma) search’. Matsuoka roared with laughter at this joke.
Ito and Tomatsu answered with ‘trying on clothes’, explaining that you would be able to make up your mind and challenge a different look. Tomatsu had drawn a chonmage (traditional Japanese topknot) on her flip chart, causing a buzz from the audience.
Hidaka said her answer was similar and revealed her flip chart: a woman with large breasts. The audience laughed at the quip, ‘So you mean you’ll try on breasts?’
Taketatsu’s idea of ‘changing clothes by thinking of them’ drew voices of favor from the audience. Her concrete example of wanting to put on cat ears by just thinking about it seemed to have struck a chord with quite a few members of the audience.
The last in line, Matsuoka impulsively suggested the feature ‘Physical Full Burst!!’. Matsuoka responded to requests for an explanation with some impossible to decipher movements that caused the ladies to react by saying, ‘Scary, scary, scary!’ He then explained, ‘You accelerate past your limits so it’s painful but you’re like “just a little more, just move a little more”’, an answer that left the ladies and the audience more confused.
Since Matsuoka was not wearing any socks, they started to think up designs for his socks. Through the talk segment, we were able to see how interesting Matsuoka is and how close the cast members are to each other; it was an incredible event for the fans.
‘I Definitely want to do a Season 3’
During the last greetings, the cast said that since it is a work made for the theater, fans will get the best experience by watching it in the cinema.
Matsuoka revealed that he had always been working on Sword Art Online uninterrupted and from the heart he yelled, ‘I definitely want to do a third season!’ The audience seemed to agree since they applauded so hard that the stage felt it would crack.
Then, it was time for LiSA’s surprise appearance. She enthusiastically performed Sword Art Online -Ordinal Scale-’s theme song ‘Catch the Moment’, firing up the crowd.
It was such a wonderful stage. Through the live concert and talk segment, it felt like the AnimeJapan 2017 event with the most unity among the fans. With the screenings of the dubbed versions, there are many opportunities to see Sword Art Online -Ordinal Scale-, so I would be happy if fans could go see the movie in theaters.
