Are you excited about the new season? The staff here at MANGA.TOKYO is very hyped about the upcoming TV anime Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish), originally written by Mengo Yokoyari, that will start on January 12 2017 on Fuji Television’s light-night Noitamina slot. That’s why we went to the preview of the first episode at Fuji Television’s head office.
Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya seemed like the perfect couple. However, the truth was that they both had a crush on someone else, and they were dating despite this. In other words, they were both acting as a substitute of the other’s true love. Kuzu no Honkai is a distorted, erotic, pure, and heartbreaking love story. The anime will be directed by Masaomi Andou, who also directed Gakkou Gurashi! The screenplay will be done by Makoto Uezu, known from the anime Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan) and Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assasination Classroom)
Our first impression of the anime was, ‘Look at how many aspects are loaded in! And it’s only the first episode!’ It describes how Hanabi and Mugi came to date, hoe they feel a distorted love for each other, and how the fabric of human relationships is weaved in the story. There were also scenes of passionate kissing and the two characters in bed, which would definitely make the viewers want to watch the next episode.
What we felt was the most important point was the strong respect given to the original work. I was surprised at how Mengo Yokoyari’s characters have been faithfully recreated in the animation.
One of the most distinctive traits of Yokoyari’s characters is their unique atmosphere. They are drawn with soft light lines and faint colors that express heartbreaking love. Their appearance in the animated work are exactly the same as that in the original illustrations, with the added effect of lights that are only possible in animation: the evening sunset, the shining sunlight at lunchtime in school, and the colorful lights expressing each character’s feelings.
Both the girls and boys drawn by Yokoyari are very cute. The story of warped pure love woven by the beautiful figures creates a big gap, and is very erotic. When I say ‘erotic’ here, I do not mean sexy exposure, but rather something more appealing to our hearts. The animation includes a unique atmosphere and amazing light effects that shine upon a melodramatic and erotic story amongst the beautiful characters.
In 2017, keep an eye on Kuzu no Honkai!
