They have respected each other as great creators for long, and BUMP OF CHICKEN made a new song called “Fighter” as their reaction to the manga series. The author, Chika Umino, listened to it and drew a spin-off chapter of the series. It was distributed as an unprecedented collaboration.
As the TV anime adaptation of the series was announced, they were eager for BUMP OF CHICKEN, who had shown their best love for the original manga, to do the opening song, and their second collaboration was finally realized.

Q1: How do you like working on the collaboration with Chika Umino again?
We are so glad to be able to work on a collaboration again with our favorite manga, “March Comes in like a Lion”. I’m really anxious about its sequel at the moment and want to read it very soon.
Q2: What do you expect from the anime adaptation of “March Comes in like a Lion”?
I’m really looking forward to seeing what her beautiful pictures will be like when animated, and also actually hearing all the great lines that I have read as letters in manga. I can’t wait for the premiere.
The manga overview
“March Comes in like a Lion” is a big hit ongoing manga series by Chika Umino, best known for another ongoing series “Honey and Clover”. It is about shogi or Japanese chess, published in Hakusensha’s “Young Animal” magazine. Currently 11 volumes of the series have been released. It won the fourth Manga Taishou Award in 2011 and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category. In 2014, it won the Grand Prize of the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and in 2015, it won the first place in “Book of the Year 2015” in comic category on the magazine “Da Vinci”. The TV anime adaptation of the series will premiere on NHK in 2016 fall, and the live action movie adaptation is scheduled to premiere in 2017.
The protagonist, Rei Kiriyama, lost his family in a traffic accident when he was still a child. He is a 17 years old professional shogi player, suffering solitude. He lives by himself in Shitamachi area of eastern Tokyo, and meets a family of three sisters, Akari, Hinata, and Momo, who then start changing his life little by little. This is a heart-warming story where various people regain “something” they have lost in the past. And it is also a story of struggles.
