The opening song with the title ‘The Day’ was contributed by Porno Graffitti and will be released on CD on May 25th. The main protagonist Izuku Midoriya, No. 1 Hero ‘All Might’ as well as Izukus’s childhood friends like ‘Katsuki Bakugō’ make an appearance in this video. We have taken the release of the opening video as reason to interview the video’s director, Kenji Nagasaki, who has also worked on its storyboard.
-Please tell us something about the opening video’s theme.
First of all, just as in the main movie, I wanted to lay the focus on the teacher-pupil relationship of Izuku and All Might, and from there add more and more elements.
– What impression did you have on the opening theme song ‘The Day’?
Usually we base our work on the lyrics and melody of the corresponding song, but listening to ‘The Day’ and recognizing some of the work’s world elements in its lyrics, I could feel that the two members of Porno Graffitti really had read the manga and had given some thought to it. The first half made me feel Izuku’s tough situation, and from there a feeling of encouragement overcomes me. I thought it’s a song that gives you an image of how Izuku is growing up I think.
– I have the feeling that Izuku’s drama begins from the second half.
Yeah, that’s right. For example right in the middle of the video, there’s a scene with Izuku and Batsuki concerning Izuku’s and All Might’s relationship, and on the other hand the relationship between Izuku and Batsuki, a very important part of the story. This confrontation is also a very important part for the future development of the story.
– After the refrain the scenes get more and more action packed, right?
This work is about hero action, it tells the story of boys and girls who want to become heroes. To express those two things we show in the refrain All Might and Aizawa who are super heroes and teachers at the same time. The action begins when the pupils get pulled toward the teachers and then rush into battle. The facial expressions and movement are drawn in a forward facing way.
– Is there a scene in the opening video that you especially like?
After the refrain, when Izuku’s and All Might’s punch overlap, I think. I wanted to include that scene even before I listened to the song for the first time. I wanted to draw a theme like ‘Izuku and All Might’, kind of the foundation, I think.
Two episodes of the anime have already been broadcasted and Izuku and All Might’s encounter as well as All Might seeing the hero qualities hidden within Izuku have been shown. On April 17th (Sun) at 5pm the third episode will air. Moved by All Might’s encouraging words saying ‘You can become a hero.’, to finally become a super hero and to enroll in the prestigious hero academy, Izuku advances vigorously.
A proposal by All Might to the ‘having no personality’ Izuku….
New characters will also make their first appearances, accellerating the development of the story even more.
Regarding episode 3 and the future development of the story director Nagasaki wants to close the interview with the following message.
From episode 3 the teacher-pupil relationship between All Might and Izuku will start. Also will Ochako and Iida make their first appearances as well as many characters you will recognize from the opening video.
Of course the personalities of the Yuuei Highschool, the villains and the fights from the refrain part of the video are also waiting for you. Look forward to action scenes like the ones you can already see in the opening video.
