If we had to pick just one work that we are looking forward to in 2017, then it would probably have to be Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish).
Serialised to great acclaim in Monthly Big GanGan, the words ‘a pure and distorted love story’ are used in the introduction to the manga by author Mengo Yokowari. They really do represent the story.
The female protagonist Hanabi Yasuroka is to be played by Chika Anzai, a talented voice actress known as Asuha Chigusa in Qualidea Code, Mary in Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash as well as Reina Kousaka in Hibike! Euphonium. This is her first time playing the main protagonist, and expectations are high due to the high quality of her previous roles.
The cast is full of talented voice actors such as Nobunaga Shimazaki as Mugi Awaya, Shiori Ozawa as Noriko Kamomebata (Moka), Kenji Nojima as Narumi Kanai, and Aki Toyosaki as Akane Minagawa.
The series will air on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block from January 12, 2017 and will also be available on Amazon Prime Video both in Japan and overseas.
Second-year high school student Hanabi Yasuraoka is consumed with a love that can never be fulfilled. She searches for the warmth of another person while hurting those she feels close to. This is a pure and distorted love story.
Mengo Yokoyari’s manga Kuzu no Honkai was serialized in Monthly Big GanGan to great acclaim.
The robust cast includes director Masaomi Ando, (Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut, Gakkou Gurashi!) and screenwriter Makoto Uezu (Arslan Senki, Ansatsu Kyoshitsu).
Comment from Chika Anzai, who plays Hanabi Yasuraoka
I’m Chika Anzai, the voice actress for the anime’s protagonist, Hanabi Yasuraoka. The desires of the characters collide with each other in this vivid depiction of a bittersweet love story
I’d be happy if you get immersed not just in the original comic series but also in this anime version. I’m looking forward to working with the production team as well as the voice cast team. I myself will do my utmost to love somebody as Hanabi. I will make sure to achieve my goals in this anime, Kuzu no Honkai. Please stay tuned!’
Comment from Nobunoga Shimazaki, who plays Mugi Awaya
‘Hi, I’m Nobunaga Shimazaki, and I play Mugi Awaya. When I first read the comic series during my audition, it really moved me. The work had a lot of influence on me and my heart continued to ache for quite a while. I will try my very best to make a great and touching piece of work! Please stay tuned!’
Comment from Haruka Tomatsu, who plays Sanae Ebato
‘Ever since I read the original work at the audition I’ve been completely sucked in and I knew I really wanted to play a part in it! I’m really happy I’m able to play the part of Sanae!’
Comment from Shiori Izawa, who plays Noriko Kamomebata (Moka)
‘I’m really happy to be able to play Moka as I was already a fan of the original work. There are so many people in the world, so why does it have to be THAT one person? And just how much of a miracle is it for that one person to fall in love with you? Let’s enjoy ‘romance’ together!’
Comment from Kenji Nojima, who plays Narumi Kanai
I’m Kenji Nojima, and I play Narumi Kanai. I was able to read the original manga and I felt feelings of confusion as well as getting absorbed in the work. At first I was a little worried as to how they would be able to portray the world of the manga as an anime, but as we did the recording it went really smoothly and it became really easy to enter to world of Kuzu no Honkai. I think the fans of the manga can really enjoy this anime! Please watch it! Thank you!’
Comment from Aki Toyosaki, who plays Akane Minakawa
‘This is a work that is overflowing with a purity that contains poison. I worked very hard to properly portray the innocent and graceful Akane. It’s a story about painful and clumsy love. There is also a mark left by the “scum” that lies inside your heart.’

Comment from Masaomi Ando (Director)
‘It doesn’t break windows or cause injuries, but this really is a “dangerous” work. I really am honored to be able to work on the anime adaptation of Kuzu no Honkai. I put a lot of time and effort into turning the poison of the original work into film. I want to share with you fleeting, cruel and beautifully vertigo-inducing work. Get tainted with scum! Please look forward to it!’
Comment from Makoto Uezu (Series Composition; Script)
‘It’s my first time teaming-up with Director Ando, but we’re both the gloomy type so we get along well.
I worked very hard on this piece while reminiscing on the sad love stories of our youth. It’s a sorrowful, chest-hurting anime that is also very beautiful!’
