From early childhood she loved singing. Although she had little confidence in herself about anything, singing is the one thing she would often get praised for. However, as an elementary school student she was mocked for her unique voice, and deeply wounded as a result.
At the end of her first semester in middle school, she stopped going to school. She had no faith in her own voice, looks, or academic achievement.
It was the singing of Nakamori Akina, whom her parents had made her listen to as an elementary school student, that roused Wajima from this depressed state. She began to realize that she could use her own unique voice to sing.
By the time she was in her third year in middle school, two local schools merged, and little by little she began attending classes again.
When it came time to go to high school, Wajima found a music school for vocalists in Sapporo that she wanted to attend. Her parents were against the idea initially, but eventually sent her off with a smile.
She attended the music school, regular high school, and worked part time in Sapporo. At times her extreme workload got the best of her, but her parents were always there to support her.
With the support of her parents, her school teachers and peers, and her friends who attended her recitals, she decided that she wanted to seize the opportunity to follow a path toward becoming a singer. That’s when she came across a Horipro x Pony Canyon audition for anime singers. This seemed perfect because she had developed a passion for anime songs after people who went to see her perform at a school event suggested that she go into anime music.
After that, she became entranced with anime, and started singing only anime songs.
Eventually, she arrived at the Horipro x Pony Canyon “Next Generation Anime Singer” audition.
She passed the initial records screening, but the first performance auditions were to be held only in Tokyo and Osaka, so she nearly gave up.
That’s when her father gave her a push.
She found a strong determination in her love of anime and anime songs, and faced the audition with an “I won’t lose, no matter what” mindset.
As a result, she flew by the initial audition, all the way to the final stages.
Of 10,041 initial applicants, the final stage saw only 13. Wajima brilliantly displayed her inner passion and expressive power at the final audition, consequently winning the grand prix.
Since that day, her life has changed. As her official debut nears, her entire world looks surreal.
When she completed her first recording, memories of all her accomplishments to that date flooded back, bringing tears to her eyes.
“I’m ecstatic to be at the starting line of all my childhood dreams. I’m ready to give it my all! Not only am I having my professional debut, but with my song also being the title track for the Mayoiga anime, I also get to fulfill my dream of recording an anime opening theme song. I’m just so full of shock and emotion right now. I recorded the track thinking of the Mayoiga world, of course, but I also put a lot of my own emotion into it. I hope this song can give everyone who listens to it a push when they need the courage to take that one extra step.” said an enthusiastic Wajima.
The Mayoiga TV anime will broadcast starting this April on the MBS Animeism slot on WOWOW. It is directed by Girls Und Panzer and Shirobako veteran Mizushima Tsutomu. Series design is by Okada Mari, of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and The Anthem of the Heart. Animation will be done by Diomedea, also known for Kantai Collection.
