Supervised By Tsuburaya Productions! “Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Coin” Released on June 6th (Mon)!
Taisei Coins Corporation announced the release of the “Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Coin” from June 6, 2016 (Mon).
The coins were made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Ultraman series since its first airing. The commemorative coins in gold and silver were designed under the supervision of Tsuburaya Productions, cast by Australia’s oldest Perth Mint, and issued by Tuvalu for Japan.
■Lineups of the “Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Coin”
The coin design was inspired by the first generation Ultraman and supervised by Tsuburaya Productions. Katsunori Aoki, an art director who designed Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Logo and Ultraman Foundation Logo, also designed coins and packages. Solidly designed coins will sure to satisfy Ultraman fans as well as coin collectors.
Product lineups are as follows: 【1/2 Ounce Gold Coin】(226,800 Yen including tax)、【5 Ounces Silver Coin】(75,600 Yen including tax)、【Gold & Silver Coins and Certificates With Matching Coin Number, Limited 78 Sets】(302,400 Yen including tax). Only 780 of each coin are issued, the number taken from the imaginary nebula in the Ultraman series “Nebula M 78.” Each coin is placed into a special case attached with a certificate with a serial number.
■Supporting Children with Charity Auction
Taisei Coins Corporation will hold a 1-Week Charity Auction from July 10th to 17th, where the sales will be donated to the Ultraman Foundation to support children. Items listed for the auction are Serial No.1 and Serial No. 78 of 【Gold & Silver Coins and Certificates With Matching Coin Number】, which will only be issued for limited 78 sets. The packages will be signed by Susumu Kurobe, who acted Shin Hayata in the original series. Details are to be announced.
Ultraman Foundation was established by Tsuburaya Productions and other supporting companies to help the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Ultraman Foundation will continue to sincerely support the future of children by sending goods and supplies.
■”Ultraman” A Hero Loved By All Generations
“Ultraman” was originally aired in July 1966, as a sequel of A Special Effects Fantasy Series/空想特撮シリーズ “Ultra Q.” Now we consider Ultraman as the originator of storys with hero transforming into gigantic forms.
Ultraman’s charismatic character, unforgettable monsters that appear week after week, and the drama around the Scientific Special Search Party really intrigued many children at the time. The original show definitely had a great impact on other special effect TV shows and movies, animes, mangas, and movies that were created in the later period.
【Design and Commentary】
■Observe Side (Gold and Silver Coins)
The design of the observe side of gold and silver coins are the same. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is engraved, which are only approved to use in Commonwealth Nations including Tuvalu.
＜1/2 Ounce Gold Coin＞
On the reserve side of the gold coin, Ultraman’s side portrait is engraved together with the Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Logo and the year 1966. The Ultraman’s side portrait was newly designed from the logo of Ultraman Foundation.
＜5 Ounce Gold Coin High Relief＞
The reserve side of the silver coin has Ultraman posing for his most popular technique, the Specium Ray. Surrounding Ultraman you’ll find 50 stars representing the 50th Anniversary. Also, the Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Logo and the words “SINCE 1966” stating the year the show was first aired.
The coins are bold and profound (approximate thickness 12.5mm).

Tuvalu is a small country of the Commonwealth Nations (became independent in 1978) located in the Pacific Ocean comprising three reef islands and six true atolls, with a population of approximately 10,000 people. However due to recent sea level rising from the greenhouse effect, it is said that the islands will sink under the ocean in near future. The part of the sales of the Ultraman Series On-Air 50th Anniversary Coins will be returned to Tuvalu.
