Hi, Yuki here!
I was not planning to write a review for this anime, however, after I watched it I liked it too much so that I had to write a review. I hope that anime fans overseas will watch this anime as well
after reading this review.
Unable to forget the philanthropic show ‘Shinigami’ performed by Yakumo, a famous traditional comic storyteller, Yotaro, an ex-prisoner, went to the theatre right after he is being released
from the prison.
Yotaro begs Yakumo to accept him as an apprentice. He then figured out that Yakumo is living with a girl called Konatsu. Not only that, he somehow senses that Yakumo and Konatsu have a
sort of relationship that cannot be interfered easily by a 3rd person…
Summary of Episode 1
‘Since i have nothing, I am going to Asuko.’ Ex-thug, Yotaro, unable to forget the story ‘Shinigami’ he heard from Yakumo, the 8th master of Yurakutei, headed to the theatre right after he is
being released. He begs Yakumo to accept him as an apprentice but…
On the other side, Yakumo, while deeply tied with Konatsu, is not able to escape from his past. He puts everything in Rakugo and is made a fool of by his own fate.
What is Rakugo?
Rakugo is an art of telling story. It is an art that is being passed from the Edo period. The Rakugo storytellers’ repertoire includes Japanese folding fans as well as handkerchiefs. The
storyteller also acts in different roles. The audience of Rakugo uses their imagination to widen the world of the story. Rakugo is a very simple art.
I am Japanese but i have never thought of wanting to watch Rakugo ever. I think it is hard to say that Rakugo is a well seen art in modern Japan.
Regarding this anime, I knew it was about Rakugo before i watched it and I honestly didn’t really feel like watching it.
After watching episode 1
This anime is an anime that really made me wanting to watch Rakugo even though I had prejudices about it. The first episode is around an hour, but the pace of the story was pretty good.
Even people like me, who don’t know anything about Rakugo, were able to enjoy this anime. Also I was very touched by the actions of the protagonist Yotaro.
After I finished the episode, I lingered a bit about the anime, and re-watched it, I was touched by the episode again. I really can’t wait until the 2nd episode comes out.
The protagonist Yotaro is a very talented guy, and the anime itself rexpresses Rakugo itself in a really nice warming way. After watching this anime, I really feel that I understand now the
story of people putting their lives in Rakugo. There isn’t any Rakugo related anime that is better than this.
Without doubt I think that this anime is one of those animes of this season that receive very good feedback.
