Today’s subtitles is “Walking on Thin Ice.” This subtitle comes from a Japanese proverb meaning that you must always be on your guard because danger (the ice breaking) could come at any time. (Source: Kotowaza Jiten)
The streets of Ikebukuro are not safe at the moment. Red-eyed zombie-like creatures roam the streets, while Izaya and Shizuo are underway in a duel to the death. The ice here is very thin indeed.
Let’s look at the highlights of this precipitous Episode 33.
Synopsis: Episode 33
Just as Nasujima planned, the “saika worshippers” have grown in number and are surrounding the area around Russian Sushi. The Blue Square members are caught up in the mess. Anri encounters Kadota, who is mobilizing to help Karisawa. Meanwhile, Izaya and Shizuo’s duel unfolds, and Shinra tries to communicate his feelings to Celty. The many threads are intertwining. Twists, turns, and confusion are all coming to a head.
Highlight #1 – Major Characters Gather At The “Starting Spot”
In this episode, all the major characters make their way to the same place and bring all their various issues with them.
– First up, the Mikado-led Blue Squares, along with Masaomi and Chikage.
Chikage phoned Mikado and they arranged to meet at “the place where the Dollars gathered for the first time.”
– Next, Nasujima. In order to lure out Shizuo, Saika has targeted Shizuo’s boss, Tom. A large crowd of “saika worshippers” starts to gather around the restaurant Russian Sushi. Russian Sushi is very close, only a one or two minute walk, from the place where they first met. It looks like Mikado won’t be able to help getting caught up in this.
– Team Kadota and Anri
Karisawa took to the streets of Ikebukuro to look for Kadota, but finding the town overrun with “saika worshippers” she hides herself. Meanwhile, Anri makes her way to Celty’s apartment building where she meets up with Kadota and his group. They all head out together to Ikebukuro to rescue Karisawa.
Izaya vs. Shizuo
The fated battle between these two approaches its climax.
Until now, Izaya had been doing everything possible to take out Shizuo, but this is the first time they have actually been face-to-face. On the flip side, this goes to show how caught up Izaya has been in trying to exterminate Shizuo.
Izaya attempts to exact his finishing blow by thinning out the oxygen in the room and asphyxiating Shizuo, and then lights a flame which causes a massive explosion. As the explosion hits, Celty, who we thought had lost all her memories, saves Shizuo. The battle continues.
However, Izaya is starting to weaken. Will one of them end up dead?
It’s interesting that as the two of them fought, there were two flashbacks to Shinra’s high school days. Creator Ryohgo Narita’s comments on twitter:
“Shinra’s flashback scenes in this episode were brief, but if you all could keep them in mind until the last episode, I can’t tell you why, but I’d be very happy.”
With that in mind, I wonder if this quote from Shinra will turn out to be significant. “I have someone I love, and for this love I will lie or even become a villain.” It looks like some exciting developments await us in the final episode.
What do you think?
At long last we are headed straight for the climax. There are lot of loose ends getting wound up in one place.
See you next time!
