Those characters who haven’t had a chance to meet before come face to face in Ikebukuro, leading to new and more problems. The 28th episode reveals a lot of things to us. Let’s review what happened.
Summary of Episode 28
Chikage pays Koukinzoku, the yellow scarf team, an abrupt visit. Chikage explains to the members that he is chasing the group who’s responsible for Kadota’s hit-and-run accident, and also responsible for the attack on Toramaru. Baffled by Chikage’s sudden approach, Masaomi agrees to take on Chikage’s challenge and engages in an one-one-one fistfight. On the other hand, Anri is also confounded with the newly-learned facts on Saika, as well as on a bizarre offer from Kasane. Celty finally came around after having collapsed with shock, and then, Celty and Shinra receive a very peculiar visitor.
Like always, multiple incidents happen in different places, pushing the storyline to maximum complexity. I’d like to summarize the key factors from the 28th episode. There are three points.
Highlight #1: Masaomi vs. Chikage
Chikage shows up in front of Masaomi and asks him to engage in a fistfight. If Masaomi wins, Chikage will help Koukinzoku to confront against the Dollars. Masaomi accepts the deal and the two start dueling. Both sides don’t go down easily.
I never knew how tough Masaomi is. To begin with, though, if Chikage and Masaomi’s interests are the same, why do they have to fight? Well. That is because Chikage always sticks to his guns, and that is why he’s awesome.
Highlight #2: Team Saika
Anri receives an offer from Kasane to sell Saika to her. “If Saika can be removed, I may be able to return to a normal person.” Anri wonders what her options may be; however, she considers how tough the current situation might have been for Mikado and Masaomi, and she realizes that she doesn’t want to escape from what she is going through right now no matter what that means to her. In the end, she declines Kanase’s offer.
Highlight #3: Shizuo got released
Shizuo has been locked up in jail for the accusation of misconduct. He is released abruptly when the victim took down her claim. As Shizuo walks out of the jail, he witnesses the explosion of a ban carrying Celty’s head. Subsequently he saw an individual who looks like Varona leaving the explosion site with Celty’s head.
The subtitle of the 28th episode is “Blood is thicker than water.” According to a dictionary the proverb means :
“said to emphasize that you believe that family connections are always more important than other types of relationships” (Cambridge Dictionaries Online)
The family connection translates to Saika’s curse in this show. Once someone is cut by another person who possesses Saika becomes a child of Saika. In a similar manner, whoever is cut by Saika’s child would become a granddaughter or grandson. Once the connection is formed, the relationship between the parents and children surrounding Saika is more assured, than that of strangers.
I want to capture some of the information I have gathered about Saika. First, Kasane owns the cursed sword “Saika.” A part of the sword was sold to Shingen, then handed to Sayaka who is a mother of Anri. When Sayaka kiiled herself the ownership of Saika transfers to Anri.
In a similar way, children and grandchildren kept expanding the circle, leading Saika’s control to grow bigger and stronger.
Looking back, Durarara!! is the story of Saika. Especially, Durarara!! X 2 features Saika as a part of the storyline.
