Episode 1:Look before you leap (lit. “Banging on an iron bridge before crossing”)
A group of young men and women go on a bus tour named “First Life Start-over Tour” to their promised land, called Nanaki Mura (Nanaki village: 納鳴村). It is supposed to be a utopian village where “supposedly missing” people are enjoying their lives happily away from the society. Mitsumune, a high school student, and his friend, Hayato, also joined this bus tour. Requested by the tour host, Dahara, the party starts introducing themselves to reveal that they are all seized by despair in life. The bus drives on with them, feeling somehow excited by their new life.
Nursery rhyme. A mystery village that doesn’t exist on maps. A new anime in a dubious atmosphere has started.
28 people joined this mysterious tour purporting that they can start a new life.
An inexplicable tour that each participant is supposed to go “missing” and is required to bring one’s own suicide letter.
All the party members are somewhat off their rocker, including an edgy chuuni-byou (or mental stage in puberty), a firearm maniac, a job quitter and so on.
Being introduced to 28 participants of the tour all at once, I was a little taken aback.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this anime is going to deal with this number of characters.
Even though they are calling this tour a “Life Start-over”, they all look like having fun. And this mismatch with the overall bizarre air is disturbing and makes us feel restless about the future development of the show.
Individual ulterior motives may conflict one another and can result in some accidents.
By the way, it is revealed that the protagonist, Mitsumune, is traumatized by something. It appears to be related to his mother, and I wonder if this fact becomes an important element of the story development.
Starting over for a new life.
“Mayoiga” or “Lost Village”, stands for a Japanese folklore told in the northeast to eastern Japan, and is often said that it brings wealth to the visitor who wanders into. The party including Mitsumune is heading to this “Nanaki Mura” which is called a hidden “Utopia” away from the secular society.
Does “starting over” mean they are going to attain happiness in the end?
Since every single character appears to have a certain dark side, I guess they all meant to set themselves free from their problems by joining this tour. These young people are heading for a utopia to get out of their curse or distress.
I feel really uncomfortable, however, considering the impression I get from the show is that Nanaki Mura does not sound like a utopia at all. I absolutely can’t imagine where this story is going to. What kind of story is this going to show us?
Usually a bus driver would be just a minor character, but this driver stands out. It is quite possible that he may also play a significant role in this story.
As he drove the bus recklessly to show us his dangerous nature, we can’t just dismiss him.
The first episode ended with introducing the characters and scattering mysteries.
It gives us the creepy air and the outlook on the world is somewhat supernatural. The next episode will take us into Nanaki Mura, so we can’t miss it, the story may unfold itself at one burst.
