Episode 1 Rundown
“Battlefield of the Valkyries”
Delta Squadron and Walküre managed to suppress the Var uprising. The squadron with mysterious abilities that attacked Al Shahal has fled. Freyja Wion, more determined than ever, arrives at planet Ragna along with Hayate Immelman, and prepares to participate in the final auditions for Walküre.
The moment all anime and music fans have been waiting for, the debut of the latest Macross series: Macross Delta!
The first episode alone introduced a lot of characters all at once, and three songs were presented, as for the Valkyrie battles, however, much is still unknown. This series is picking up steam fast, and I’m already falling in love with it.
Number 1: The Newest Part of the Legendary Macross Series
The long-awaited newest Macross series has begun! What happened to the people who settled on a new planet in Macross Frontier? The aliens, unidentified life forms, and artificial intelligences that they had to battle… what were they? The newest series, Macross Delta, begins to unveil many of the mysteries left behind by its predecessor. The Macross series are about romance and robot battles, but above all they are about music performed by the main characters.
Number 2: The Three Main Elements of Macross
There are three primary elements in any Macross series: Love Triangles, rapid-pace technological warfare, and songs that move both the love stories and war stories forward. All Macross series are built on these three pillars.
This first episode introduced the Var Syndrome, a strange disease which turns its victims into violent suicidal maniacs, and the Walküre tactical unit, which works to suppress and disarm those infected by virus.
Walküre’s music quiets and calms Var Syndrome victims, but there are factions attempting to interfere with their efforts. Funnily enough, Walküre is an all-girls unit, and the group that wants to stop them from healing people is a composed entirely of handsome men. At any rate, all the character details and the plotline remain mysteries, but the first episode at least served to bring us into this new and beautiful Macross universe.
Number 3: Songs for Peace and the Principal Characters
The first episode introduced three songs all in one go.
We heard the first song when two of the main characters first met. Hayate Immelman, working in a shipyard, was listening to music while hauling around a crate of apples in which Freyja Wion was stowing away. Freyja, unable to help herself from singing, gets discovered by Hayate Immelman. The song that played during this fateful meeting scene was Jiritikku♡BEGINNER.
The second track was the song that Walküre performed in order to suppress the Var Syndrome that was causing havoc in the streets and on the battlefield. The track that played as Walküre and the Delta Squadron Valkyries faced off against the enemy was “Love! Halation THE WAR.” That also happens to be Walküre’s theme song.
The third track appeared when Walküre’s Mikumo Guynemer was in trouble. She pulled out a song called “Ikenai Borderline.” This song acted as a trigger for Freyja Wion, making her recall some past trauma. Freyja Wion, herself, had made supporting Walküre her life mission, and upon hearing this song she could not suppress the voice in her chest, and rushed headlong into the heart of the battlefield to sing along with Walküre. This was the most exciting scene in the first episode.
All three songs are emotionally moving and are already famous.
Number 4: Mysteries Yet To Be Unveiled
The first episode was a whirlwind. It kicked off the plot of this successor to the Macross universe, and introduced some fantastic new songs. But there are many unknowns.
- What was the song that initially brought about the Var Syndrome?
- Who are Walküre’s enemies?
- Freyja Wion has a heart stuck on her bangs. Why does it shine when she sings? One of the enemies, Bogue Con Vaart, had something similar on her hair. What does it mean?
- When Walküre were in danger, Freyja Wion began singing and dashed into the battlefield. An “active response” was detected coming from her. The same thing was detected from Hayate Immelman when he piloted the Valkyrie. What is this “active response”?
The first episode ended without clearing up any of these mysteries.
Number 5: After TV Broadcast, “Ikenai Borderline” Spikes In Popularity
Ikenai Borderline went on sale on iTunes at the end of last year. Since the start of 2016, the song has spent 30 days on the iTunes Song Chart Top 10. Immediately following the anime broadcast, the track resurged on the charts, hot on the heels of major Japanese artists such as Perfume and One OK Rock. Another song from this first episode, “Love! Halation THE WAR,” also went into distribution, and now Macross Delta has two songs in the Top 10. This first episode has fueled anticipation not only for the story to unfold, but for what amazing music is yet to come!
