The Koutetsujou has arrived at Shitori Station. It was the first time they saw a station still occupied by humans since they left Aragane Station. Ikoma and others went shopping in the town and enjoyed a peace time they hadn’t had for a while. Meanwhile, Ayame went to speak to the lord of the station to ask for provisions. But food is precious for every station…
This episode showed us a peaceful day without any Kabane.
A common life such as shopping and Tanabata celebration appeared. There was no usual brutality nor savage aspects as we had seen, but instead there were people in a lively society. It was such a heart-warming normal life episode so that the audience can relax and enjoy as a breather.
We found out Mumei’s real name, Hozumi, too. Ikoma told her that her mother probably named her so in hopes of her being able to eat a lot of rice. However, there is no rice field in the world occupied by Kabane. That made Ikoma all the more firmly determined to “make Mumei human again and destroy all the Kabane”.
It is a simple and clear determination, but he does not know how to achieve it. His resolution came from his very nature and the fact that he had always believed in people around him and himself.
On the Tanabata evening, Ikoma read his own wish, that he wrote on a wishing card, aloud to the others. “I want to wish for more than just being alive and win over them as long as I’m alive”. His statement has the same effect as his resolution that he told Mumei. Such a desire of a human being is the very reason why humans have survived and also why Ikoma did not turn into a Kabane. Ikoma’s desire is what drives him to fight on.
After Ikoma’s statement, Ayame announced her wish to reopen Aragane Station. She had shown her princess-like naive and ignorant nature before, but she has changed into a leader figure with a heart of gold as the story went by. Her determination will encourage and motivate the people of the Koutetsujou to live their life with hope.
This episode was painted with determinations in the form of wishes. Each single character proved to us that they live without losing hope in the world filled with Kabane.
Their normal day without any battles added new dimensions to the characters without boring us.
It made me want to see another normal day episode like this some time again.
